This is inspiring! Maybe next time I'll just wrap some masking tape around the joint and call it good. Might "go for the good stuff" and use the blue painters grade tape! Laughing

Please, please, puh-leease, someone come up with a decent line of boots!

Still happy with my EMPI-branded replacement boots. 13 years, no clamps on the small end and no failures. Only replaced them because I was installing new engine, transmission and CV joints and they were looking kinda dried out....

Well as you've learned, silicone has great longevity but little tensile strength, so it needs fiber reinforcement, and that gets kinda ridiculous to lay up in a bellows shape. It also doesn't play well with every kind of lube. And no ones making synth rubbers that are worth a shit at a realistic price. Probably the best material of all, natural rubber, is also way expensive.

Like nearly everything it's funny to watch the neos here marvel over it, but this is a decades-old problem, we were already dealing with the loss of rubber quality in replacement parts back in the 80's. Knowing there's not going to be an affordable materials solution any time soon, a few years ago I messed around with hard materials:

I ran a full set of these for about 6 months, lotsa miles on and off-road. They worked quite well but the design needs a little more work to be ready for prime time.

of all the various quirky cars ive worked on, and been involved in the communities of, the vanagon is the only one that seems to suffer from CV boot failures.

so strange!

i put a new set of rockford boots + 944s on new axles from VC on our van this winter. heres hoping they dont have early failure but now im going to keep watching them like a hawk. what a shame to flush a couple hundred $ down the drain like that.

Curious if my boots will hold up.

These area some 944 joints that came with boots that I think I got from Burley a while back before they got a bunch of the lobro joints in.

They are 944 joints and boots so I guess is does not really help people running regular vanagon stuff but just curious what makes the vanagon boots fail.

With the double seal and snug fit on the axle I am going to try to run them without clamps.
Perhaps that will allow them to settle in where they want so they are not stretched out too much in a turn or during suspension travel.

That's interesting. They are exactly the same boots that came on my latest set of ebay axles.

These boots are found on Audi 5000 too. I buy the Lobro ones, they last a little longer than the Vanagon model but start to crack no matter what....

The Eurovan is plagued with bad aftermarket boots too, but it`s all across the board on many cars Crying or Very sad

I think my EV still has the original boots after 170k and 19 years. A testament to quality from back in the day.

I think I should call this the curse of the samba...

It seems like every time I find an interesting topic to read, and some good information - I go look at my VW and find I need to address what all you good folks are chatting about.

I just checked my CV boots - I believe they were installed by the previous owner in october 2019 - along with 930 axles and stubs and new rear wheel bearings.

Now i've got to go in, and replace the boots. Now I'm reading about that procedure - and wondering if all the info in this thread only applies to stock rear axles, or do I need to get very picky about where I source the boots for 930 axles?

I just ordered the Tiguan CV boots from my local VW dealership. Not cheap at $38 CDN each plus tax, but I am hoping these are the last boots I have to install. I'll get them in a couple of days, but I won't be installing them until September while I am doing my Subaru swap. I will post up a new thread when I do, though.

That pic looks like Aug 2018 ... or is it recent?

On a lifted van the first pleat would rub harder on the axle, low van it might tolerate rubbing for longer.

Awesome, thanks for doing that!

That is the 2018 pic. Crawled under just a few days ago (valve lash check)...they look no different. I never fasten the end of the boot. My axles are OEM and have the recess. The pic is just after install of the boots. After a short drive the end of the boot has now settled in the recess.

Started reading this thread and check my boots.
I had installed all new Rockford boots on Feb 3, 2019 (3500 miles ago)
Found one bad, three great shape.
Replace the bad one with same kind, Rockford 339-4

What year bus? I don't see a 339-4 on their listing.
