Wondering if a dime size hole in a heater box would cause deceleration backfiring. The tab that connects the tin to the box ripped off. Could that be the source for a back fire?

I'll just throw it out there but likely it's an exhaust leak.
Check your connections to the heads and the muffler. Should be able to hear it, feel it with your hand or see the exhaust burn around the connections.
