I'm working on replacing the tie rods in the 69 Beetle I recently acquired. The outside left popped out easy. The two on the steering box took just a slight bit of heat and they popped as well. The outside right one is resisting all efforts. I've tried: two hammers on the arm, hammering upwards on the threaded end that's through the arm, pickle fork, heat, lot's of penetrating oil of course. Even a zip gun. And combinations of all of the above I'm not a newbie at working on cars and most of my career is working on machinery. Nothing in my bag of tricks has worked, so I was wondering if anyone out there that has had a few "stuck" ends has any suggestions. If all else fails I'll cut the end flush and drill up through it to relieve some of the pressure on the taper, but of course I would like to find an easier way LOL

Thanks!

The only thing you haven't tried is a tie rod end removal tool. Something like these:

I've used one similar to the upper one and it has never failed.

This is what I use to remove tie rod ends. Easy and no heat necessary.

I have a video of the first tool shattering my finger in February, just now got the nail regrown haha. Be careful with these!

I purchased one of the ones shown from Advance Auto Parts. It needed a little help from some heat and a few whacks on the knuckle with a 3 lb sledge, but it finally popped loose. Yay! Thanks for the suggestions, I was starting to get desperate LOL. Everything is back together and I took a short test drive, everything seems to be working properly. On to the next issue!!

Toe-in adjustment.

I did the string alignment with lots of patience. Turned out well. I will get a professional job before new tires though.

Did that, at least a rough adjustment for the moment. This week I'll be a little more "scientific" about it. Once I get my new tires (the ones currently on the car are from 1997) I'll have it done in the shop that will do the state inspection.

At least near me, Brakes Plus has free alignment check with coupon. Had that done on my '98 Frontier.
