Hello,
I am sure this is a simple question (that has been asked before, sorry) that might have a simple answer, but how do you manage to turn the engine on a 411 automatic? I tried turning the alternator but the belt snapped and the transmission tunnel is too narrow for a wrench (plus an extension) to reach the bolt inside it. Will the engine need to come out? I am just trying to figure out if it is stuck or not,
thanks in advance for your replies,
Abel |

it must be a very dumb question, I assume, as nobody has replied to it. |

Apologies. Busy week. Not a dumb question at all.
With the automatic I have done it from below with a large flat blade screwdriver.
If memory serves...there should be two small windows in the bell housing that allow you to access the cooling fins on the torque converter.
That being said....the belt should not have snapped. ...unless its old and rotted...or the engine is seized.
Typically a socket on the alternator.....and push on teh belt to add more tension while you turn.
Also....you might remove the spark plugs to help. Ray |

Agree with Ray, press the thumb on the (new) belt and with plugs out it should be able to turn with a wrench at the alternator.
Not so good to force it to hard if it is siezed...cooling fan fins will brake if you use them to turn it and the engine will be further damaged when rotating from siezed.

Thanks Ray and Lars for your replies. I appreciate the advise.
I must have missed those small holes when I was under the car.
I will give it a try this weekend,
cheers,

I may be responding a little late here. I always turned the engine with a large flat blade screwdriver thru the engine timing inspection hole. Simply unscrew the plastic round cover and insert the screwdriver. Carefully pry against the top of the fan and rotate the engine. Too much resistance and there is something wrong. Be gentle because you can shear the nubs off the top of the fan. I did this for years... all easily from the top side.

There are no "nubs" on the top of the fan. This is a type 4. You are thinking of a type 3 fan........unless you are suggesting prying against the fan blades .....which is the fastest way to break a fan......ask me how I learned that one! .....and it only took once!

Ray, you are so right. Been awhile since I’ve done this. I own both type 3 and type 4 and got confused. I did this for years on the 412 and never broke a fin...but you have to be very careful. Thanks for catching this.

Yep....in a pinch.....if you can see and pry against ONLY the four large spokes of the 411/412 fan....you can get away with it.
I try never to pry against the blades...but as I noted...we have all done it.
I keep thinking I might make a three prong socket tool that fits into the three recessed bolt heads to help this. Ray |

Hi guys,
thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately, I have not been able to deal with that issue yet. I have been working on patching several panels for the 411 and will probably open a thread about the restoration soon,
cheers,
