Apparently in 1961 ( for 1961 to 1967, type I cars) a special brass-color gas cap replaced the original cap as a replacement part - adding a measure of safety in the event of a more-severe front end collision - Anyone have a picture of this cap - you ever hear about this?

I've heard of the cap redesign but never that it was brass-coloured. Supposedly the original design caps had an unacceptably high tendency to pop off in a front end collision.

The non-logo cap was a retrofit after a recall. But they were not brass colored, they were plain silver in color.

That's what they actually are. I have seen them in silver and gold zinc plating. Most of the pictures you see they are silver zinc plated.

I had one that was gray toned, but I have an NOS one that's yellow:

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

Agree. The new cap design allowed air pressure release in case of tank collapse from an impact. The same style cap was factory-installed on Things.

Safety must have not been high on the agenda with Volkswagen Australia as I have never seen one!

It was a USA-mandated recall, if I "recall" correctly. Others may have chosen to not bother, or just made it a service part upon request.
