Great body.. looks VERY clean and straight.... I envy your project!

It appears the body is off the pan.. there is no wiring harness in it I can see... and even though the dash paint is original its surface rusted.... different color outside paint really cinches it. This thing is aching for a media blast for the body and pan and do it right.. powder coat that pan and build it up first... have the body done.. save up the parts you need.. and do it yourself!!

Make it what you want it.... but just my opinion, in the long run.. if you do it stock you will make FAR more money off it if you ever decide to sell it, and you might. Even I have considered it.. I LOVE my Split... but frankly the first person who came at me with a completely restored 912 could probably talk me out of it.. Smile

That old "resale red" paint has lost any character.

Stock rocks.

you've had that split, in your garage, for quite a while - been lookin' at it in your gallery - my '50 is in similar shape - i'd leave the apron and use it as is - who cares about the (stupid) money - i'm the guy who bought that '50 with the oval doors, in Oklahoma - we PM'd about it - couldn't care less about the later doors - will keep it forever - our son loves it too - will put it in his trust, along with our farm...

put him through collage partially, by selling a few busses - he graduated debt-free - thanks VWs - this 11A was my car, in NJ, 40 years ago... z

See you have a '55 convertible #2 and a '63 "milo" - there is a great California Latin-jazz band named MILO - originally the Malibu's, featuring Carlos Santana's brother, on guitar also any relation, to your '63? - z

You are going to want to fix these two items.

You need to replace the metal that was cut out of the front doughnut mount for the transmission. With that much metal missing the mount will be very lose and the transmission nosecone could actually work its way out. All of the weight of the engine is pressing up in that location and all of the torque will transmitted to that missing spot, at least on deceleration. You are also missing the metal retainer that holds the rubber in the hole.

The center tunnel is an important part of the structure of the car and with that much cut out you could have problems with frame flex. In an accident is where it may rear its head the worst.

"splitjunkie"

I seen a post of a guy that fixed the same problem on nose cone area. took a piece of strap steel, heated and bent a curve. welded in place. that will prob be my approach.

on the "window" in the tunnel agree, this one is a little large. must have been done back in the day. I've seen a number of people drilling, cutting, etc in to tunnel to access cables. how much do I need to replace? i'm running a 36hp with a Pepco.

looking back that whole '67 clip should have been cut off. I have Wolf panels or a full rear early clip. just waiting on cosmetic stuff till its rolling.

I would replace it all. There is supposed to be metal there for a reason. There is no reason for that hole under normal circumstances. Unless the clutch tube has broken from its mounting bracket there is absolutely zero reason for a hole there.

carry on my friend - remember, there is no one-way to do anything - you'll have your critics and your supporters - we're all just in different places - following one of the countless paths in life - an openminded view is just to (try) to accept as-many-as-you-can, if not all...
