So finally decided I had to remove the dash and open the heater box as no trick was removing the smell from the rat who snuck in while the van was parked up.
Pretty dirty inside even with the rats left overs. Shows why modern cars have the filters.
Also discovered one of the PO’s must have blindly tried to cut in a new stereo and in doing so cut open the heater!
Decided while it was open I might as well start with some sound deadening.
All because of a rat!
Take note of the lovely wiring I am also trying to fix. Many years ago was converted from LHD to RHD.

Don’t worry about new, modern vehicles escaping rats and mice. The pollen filters are new homes to all those rodents who ‘ roughed it ‘ with the old heater boxes. We see it all the time.
No matter how tight the intakes are on new HVAC systems, mice still get through.
Take your time, it’s a job, especially sorting out someone else’s wiring... Crying or Very sad

Grime on front rims got me started, and a slight sound when first starting a drive and braking, coming from up front. So, I got the wheels off and inspected the rotors and pads, plenty of pad left, and rotors seem thick enough. This is in prep for a ~1000 mile trip this week Wink -- includes Rocky Mountains!!

Found 3/16" OD flexible tubing at the farm store. Strung it around the front doors inside the weatherstrip.

Major sound reduction, but perhaps the passenger door needs a bit thinner tube, as it takes a good bang to close now, and I have to push the door in to get the latch to open it from outside. (Like my fridge, I guess) I assume this will 'settle' in a few weeks and not take such a bang, etc. At least the inside door handle works as usual to get out.

Only problem I have now is that I can actually hear my other whistles from the wings or whatnot, and the RWM/Corkins exhaust sound is more pronounced. But, both Mrs. Black and I like the sound of the exhaust a lot so no big deal.

Not necessary but they are evidently a very desirable accessory.

Good color choice for the van!

Updated /changed my Kilometre speedometer to MPH.
I acquired a defective mph speedo a couple of years ago and as i retired yesterday it became my first (of many) van jobs to complete.

Many thanks to Syncroheads excellent write up on a proper fix for defective odometer by dimpling the metal gear and splining the shaft... thanks!

Kilometre reading transferred to miles elasped speedometer.

One cool aspect of owning a previous Bundeswehr Doka is repainting it!
A quick rub down with a scotch brite pad and thinner, a few beers later ...VOILA!!!...finished.

Figured I would get in and check out the rear heater area while doing maintenance. Guess the PO decided to remove the core! Fan works but not much point in that.
Now the decision of a new core, storage or subwoofer!

Asked VanagonDwellers on Etsy to make me a stripe based on a design I found on an Ancestral Puebloan pottery sherd. I like their work, just couldn't see it on the Van. This morning I found the place:

I think you have achieved the ultimate level of black out. Looks fabulous, but for gods sake never paint that aluminum rim, it's just the right amount of flash.
