For the handbrake, if it's anything like a bug the rod from the button to the ratchet might be slightly bent. The one in my 66 needed some tweaking in order to work properly. Pull it out, check for straightness and grease it up. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. Made it to Bulli Brigade 27 last weekend. I left MD on 11/4 and travelled to Apex, NC to a beautiful lakefront campsite. The next day I camped in Savannah GA. Day 3 I made it to Clearwater Beach for the show. I won the long distance award, though technically my friend Loyce Carson was the real winner at 1,000 miles. I was 975 from my house if you follow maps. Loyce graciously passed the award to me since he had been in Florida longer. Either way a really great trip for the truck, with a total mileage of 2,137, with total drive time being around 48 hours behind the wheel.
The only issue I had was my fuel mixture on the carb needed a tweak which was an easy fix. The ride home was a wild experience with all the rain from the hurricane!
Some pics of my travels.

Awesome trip! Long cross state trips in a vw bus are so much better than in any other vehicle! I have logged in not just one but TWO cross country trips this year in the Jeep and though they were also enjoyable the feeling is simply not the same.
Iffin this virus shit finally comes to an end, my next cross country trip will be in the Dormy for sure! Just finished putting together a brand spanking new engine with that in mind! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Thanks pyr0man and John! Like a complete nerd I decided to track fuel economy. Mostly because I ran out of gas TWICE in this truck just driving around town. This was resolved with a fresh fuel sender from WW, but I wanted to verify its accuracy. Well, when I get to "R" I still have like 4 gallons. Here are my stats; figure if I put them here I won't lose them and can reference for future trips.
Fuel Consumption - 66 truck
Fuel Miles MPG
4.49 86 19.15367483
5.94 132 22.22222222
6.89 141 20.46444122
6.86 124 18.07580175
6.16 138 22.4025974
4.05 95 23.45679012
7.26 136 18.73278237
6.68 116 17.36526946
6.42 118 18.38006231
6.41 123 19.18876755
5.95 105 17.64705882
6.92 135 19.50867052
6.14 90 14.65798046
7.18 131 18.24512535
6.47 130 20.0927357
4.06 78 19.21182266
5.51 111 20.14519056
7.49 148 19.75967957
Totals
110.88 gallons
2137 miles
20.51 average mpg
Speed was typically 55-60 with bursts into 65 when I wasn't paying attention. _________________ Shadetree Westy

It was great to meet you and talk for a bit. Nice SC and much respect for driving down. Like Pyroman said there is nothing like taking long trips in an old VW bus. I hope you have many more planned. Make sure you come down for CTS weekend in May. BB 27 was definitely the year for SC's. I didn't get a count of them but there was alot!!! I see mine in the background of the pic with your much deserved long distance award. _________________ 58 Coral Red ragtop(Diana's car)

doveblue3 wow cool pic man! Really appreciate that.
Paul - it was really great to meet you too and see your beautiful Westfallia which I've only ever seen on the Samba before. Yeah I was surprised at the amount of single cabs too! I want to say there were at least 9 including mine?
I plan to do CTS in May, its on the calendar barring any future negotiations with my family _________________ Shadetree Westy
