Hello everyone,

I have a 1600dp in a 74 bug.

I'm attempting to pull my engine, I have everything removed and disconnected except the driver side top nut. Instead of a traditional nut, there is a smooth gold thing that is there.

I'm sure this is something simple but I've never seen one of these before so I dont even know the name.

Thanks everyone!

It's a captive nut, you remove it from the transmission side.

This was added when VW went to the Dog House fan shroud.

A 17mm swivel socket on a long extension is how you get to it.

Yep, that round thing is the captive insert used on cases having doghouse style coolers/shrouds.

Be aware that some 17mm sockets may be too wide and might need to be ground down. Myself: I haven't needed a 17mm swivel socket, I've used long extensions, can't remember if I needed a universal joint in-between. I remember positioning my body further forward than one would think, for better access.

And sometimes someone like me decided to use an allen head bolt there when access to a hex bolt head is limited...

Like Glenn said... long extension. As in every extension I had in my tool box linked together to make it around 3ft long!

I got away with using a few less extensions than Ashman, but it was a total of a foot, or slightly more.

The trick is like Cusser mentioned. Scoot forward under the car further than you’d think necessary. I also found that no universal joint was necessary: you just have to place the tool (s) straight in and turn. Don’t over tighten when reinstalling. 22 ft. lbs., if I remember correctly.
