Way to go Tom!!!! Your truck looks friggin' sweet. Lots of hard work paid off!
Way back somewhere in your thread bastardbus said VW didn't put cosmoline on paint. I have an old timer friend who worked at VW for many years in the 60's and his job was to wipe down all the cosmoline off the brand new cars. He said they came off the ship covered head to toe in cosmoline (even the glass and rubber)! I't was a shitty job, but someone had to do it! |

Ok, the Singlecab is BACK !!!! After the 3rd trip to the trans shop, it's rolling just fine !!!!!!!!
Put Tunes in it :
Drove it to Litchfeild !!
440 round trip w/ no problems, getting 22 mpg on the ride home, life in the slow lane !!
Not sure what Vw event is next-- but it will be at Trail Bash in N.J. at the end of July !
I'm making a list of winter work that I'll be doing w/ it, but for now I Just want to DRIVE IT ! |
that was cool that the thread went dead for a year and its back with you taking the bus to Litchfield.
I oogled it on sunday, you did all that work and really earned that one!!
The real question is, how tested will it be in the Pines. |

no bus is ever fully tested for the pines, but that bus is ready. |

So another long winter here in Vermont, and an update on the '66.
I drove the Truck on the Trailbash in the Pine Barrons of N.J.:
Used it to haul all kinds of stuff in the Summer/Fall:
Drove to Flanders N.J. & camped :
That was a good road test trip, Flanders N.J. back to Vt. 7.5 hours, 330 miles or so, no problems, 22 mpg, and a big ass smile for days after, I even passed a car going over Mendon Mtn.(Killington) !!
By the Fall it developed a stutter/booging issue, turned out the 30 year old 009 Dist. was giving up, put a Vacume Dist. on & it ran better, less pick up, but running well.
I also pulled all the Bed slats, filled the dozens of "extra" holes in the bed, trying to cut back on water leeking into the TT area.
Come Winter I pulled the stock-ish trans, keeping it complete, put the new Rancho trans. in, stripped a few other Big Nut trans. for parts--backing plates/hubs/Brake hardware ect., plus shipped a good core back to Rancho ($150 - to get my $450 core $$ back)
Got it in,engine too, got it fired up & running, then pulled the Steering Box:
Picked up really nice rebuild one fron John's Car Corner, put that in, good to go !!
Now were just waiting on the Snow/SALT to go away....

So I stopped at the Farm that now owns the Ladys house I got the Singlecab at, she went into a nursing home in June, she is 95
They had been caring for her for a while, bringing food to her and such, well now it's time to clear out the house, and Holy crap what a mess, 50 years of Hoarding !!
They said I could have any VW stuff, of course I was hoping for a Tilt for the SC...... NOT, But did find some cool stuff, most went to her '68 Westy I bought years ago from her, 1 14" rim from the SC ( I run 15"s) stuff I can use or sell. There was a ton of Mercedes Benz stuff, and some NSU stuff, and a bunch of Violins ect. , which she repaired for a living.
I'm going back to help clear out more stuff, I grabbed a "Atomic" red skate board, and have my eye on some cool old guitars & old tools, they like my "Honey Badger" digging skills
As for the '66, the NOS engine cracked a head & shattered a valve guide in 2018, J.P. from Mass. rebuilt it into a 1600, Got a Dizzy from Bill F., had Joe Delaney fine tune it, it runs sweeeeet !! Driving it all over the area this Summer, no shows to go to... _________________ Tom

Check for the rare early poo pail.
Looks like a nice exhaust tip and a 1970’ish single port?
I love that this thread started with complaints about slow dialup. _________________ .ssS! |

Saw this thread for the first time. Nice single cab. And thinking that signature line just changed recently??? Did he really say that? VWs are so much more interesting than politics. |

Tom,
I can't tell you what a thrill it was to see your beautiful SC on the road. I haven't seen an old VW Bus on the road in years and I don't recall ever seeing a Single Cab before.
Thank you for a fun day. _________________ Marc

Thank you Marc for helping deal w/ the Musical stuff in Edith's house, I"m stoked I found that middle seat under all that stuff in the Barn, probably was there when I bought the truck in '07. _________________ Tom
