Having clutch chatter on 69 Beetle. Looking things over under rear seat inspection cover found clutch tube as it exits body to boden tube. Many posts about welds breaking on the clutch tube. My question is how rigid shoud this clutch tube as it exits the body. I can move it left and right about 1/4-1/2 inch. Should it be absolutly rigid or some sideways movement is normal. I don't see where the rear weld on this tube is. Other posts say it should be visible throgh this inspection cover. Thanks much.

pic stolen from the photo gallery here, but the weld should be visible. A small weld where the tube touches the tunnel.

Picture of gap between boden tube and body with clutch cable visible. Is the clutch tube suppose to stick out some from the body metal?

Yes the clutch tube is supposed to stick out of the chassis where it engages the bowden tube. It is also attached inside the tunnel in at least a couple of spots and it should not move back and forth.

Exactly. Adding that there are only 3 welds that attach the tube to the tunnel. 1 at the bracket directly in back of the pedal assembly. 1 at the mid point of the tunnel, almost 2 inches in back of the ebrake handle location. 1 under that inspection cover.

Tube should be ridged and not move AT ALL. If you can move it, something broke. Wiggle it and look for what broke.

Must be broke at all 3 welds as it can be moved forward and backwards to the point it wasn't protuding out the body toward the transmission. Never made a sound while driving, just started to chatter going into first. At least I found the problem. Wonder if I would have any luck just securing at the rear inspection cover point. Probably not but might give it a try and go from there. Thanks for the input.

You can weld it up under teh cover, but you will need to bite the bullet and weld it up at the pedal. You can confirm its broke loose there before cutting anything by pulling the pedal assy and feeling the end of the tube and see if it moves..

Here's how I did mine at the pedal. Drill a 1 3/4 inch hole to access and spot weld at the bracket. Don't set the fuel line on fire.
