So a good friend has a 77 Bay with the stock fuel gauge and an aftermarket sender and it's not accurate. So he replaced it 2 more times and it's never right.

Anyone know a source for a aftermarket sender that works correctly with the stock gauge or is she I in the hunt for a good used sender?

The sender usually requires modification such as bending the float rod. I had the same issue and after bending the rod (on a full tank to reflect a full tank) it now reads correctly.

There's ways to make the replacement ones work, bending is a good start, if you want it super accurate read all of this: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=711130
Or if you still have the OG one you can repair it: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=380693

even with the VDO gauge, a new dash VR and a new gauge you have to bend the arm to set it. Use a wooden yard stick to lift the float thru the filler if the tank is out and bend gently until it reads correctly.

I replaced our dead sender and the new sender was way off. We then manually tracked fill-ups and mpg with an app, and using that data, adjusted the float height by bending the float arm. Took two or three attempts to get it "spot on" but now it's accurate.
We cut an access hole - better than pulling the engine 3x to adjust.
