Aloha,
There is a grinding and knocking sound when I am releasing the clutch in first and second gear. Any idea of what could be? Please help me! This is a 36hp 6volt non sync trans. |

… throw-out bearing --- that is adjustable - have you tried to adjust that?
I never had a trans go out of commission on me, as stated - hope it's not that - z _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Without hearing the noise, kind of hard to say. Diff bearing noise is slightly different than main shaft noise which is different from most engine noises. The buggy is the pilot bearing or the throw out bearing. They typically chime in when the clutch pedal is worked, but it has a feel, that can be felt in the pedal. My gut says TO bearing, but that is THE MOST LIKELY. One of the other bearing could be bad instead of the TO bearing or in conjunction with it! This is the problem that is faced as a mechanic. Get it wrong and the customer becomes a bigger problem than the bearing(s)!
One of 2 ways to find out for sure. Take the car to someone who knows how a Bug sounds, or pull the engine and inspect everything well.
Good luck. When I blew the differential bearings in the 70 Bug, it made a hella of noise. Like some spinning a hollow metal drum over a gravel road! But if I took my stethoscope and placed the amplifier onto the diff housing, that is where the most noise came from. Turned out to be those bearings and most of the other ones as well! _________________ Jimbo
