Also use a non adjustable timing light. The adjustable kinds read weird with sequential (and waste spark) unless you have a fancy digital adjustable light compatible with these systems. I just grab a non adjustable for this check.

+1 on the non adjustable timing light for wasted spark. My 'fancy dan' adjustable Xenon is barely visible, whereas an el cheapo gun is as bright as a button. No idea why

I'm putting together my stock 1600 with crank trigger pully from Dub shop.

Do I even bother installing the drive gear pinion if I'm just gonna cap of the distributer hole?

Leave it out. You can re install it later if you plan to use a cam sensor for sequential

i would say yes.
the option to get the engine running and cam burn done with distributor/coil is good to have. and if you have any issues in the future with crank trigger set up you can go back to std ignition.

i dont think theres any real benefits to not installing the dizzy drive, but there are a couple of reasons why you’d regret not installing

Why would you wear down the bore when it's doing absolutely nothing. It's easy to install later. Use a screwdriver to guide the shims in. Plop the drive gear in the correct orientation. Done.

Unless, your talking about the brass gear on the crank. If so then yes, you do need to install it.

Yup it needs to be there to act as a spacer on the crank.

And ya, I think i can always install the drive gear later if I really had too. I'm so done with distributers anyways lol

Thanks

If you put it in, you need a distributor to keep it in place.

what Glenn said , bad things will happen if you don't have the drive held down
. I kept the distributor in for a few months and the cap leads etc under the rear seat just in case I had a break down . The funny part with that is having a car idling at a car show with just a distributor base , not even a rotor arm . The amount of people that scratched their heads and could not work out how the engine was running with half the distributor missing had me entertained for hours Very Happy (I have a 4 post coil hidden behind the fan shroud )

Later on I cut the top off an old worn distributor , pulled the shaft out , cut it slightly shorter again ,then tapped a thread in the hole and used an NTP plug , I think it was 3/8 . then put the shaft back in to hold the driver in place on the crank gear . Then I kept a complete distributor with leads etc in the car just in case off a break down . Now I just have a spare EDIS unit and crank sensor in the tool bag and have left the distributor on the parts shelf .
