I'm just guessing, but because of the funky paint on it, would this case be for an industrial application?? I don't know if industrial engines would use a different oil cooler or not... _________________ I Didn't know what to do, So I Didn't do anything!!!! |

Possibly
The company that did the rebuild was EPE - European Parts Exchange.
There is no stamp on it in the usual place, it's on the top by the oil cooler

The engine serial stamped top center like that is typical of Type 3 engines. Maybe someone in the T3 section might have some insight on the long oil cooler stud. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Going by serial number that's a '65 Type 3 case. They used a longer oil cooler stud because the cooler lays down horizontally.
Probably has the hole in right half for dipstick tube as well as mounting bosses for rear engine mount.
Does it have cam bearings? _________________ -Bruce

I came in here to say Type 3 case but someone beat me to it.
If it was originally a Type 3 case, you can see someone has added a Type 1 dipstick tube to it. But it still has the open hole in the lower right of the pic above which is where the Type 3 oil filler tube / dipstick tube attaches. Engine number stamped on top of the case half is also a Type 3 case hallmark. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S
