I’d love to make it. Depends on how well prepped I am for leaving for Syncro Solstice by then. Thanks for keeping the interest up. I appreciate it. Very Happy

Looks we are having a gathering on short notice. It is a little out of the neighborhood though. Laughing Cool Tom and Cam ‘Hutch’ are travelling the USA/Canada this summer and Brendan and I are on our trip too. Our paths cross at St Mary campground in Glacier National Park. Site A8. Event starts at 5pm today July 3, 2018. Pics later...

As it happens, there's an upcoming one nearby the DMV area in 10 days- just N of Harrisburg, about 2 1/2 hrs N of the beltway. See https://www.facebook.com/pg/valleyvanagons/posts/?ref=page_internal See
"Vanagons In the Valley 8 Riverfront Campground-Rent A Boat · Duncannon, PA" No camping fee- just show up! Thurs July 12 start, full-bore Fri till Sun the 15th. Great riverside venue, boating encouraged, and a live music stage-- as good as it gets!
IF ANYONE from the beltway area is going up, let me know. I'm not committed to going yet, but driving in tandem might tilt my inclination to 'going'.

And there's a similar gathering (but general camping, not just VWs) Sept. 20-23. It's on the Shenandoah, at Watermelon Park in Berryville VA (west of Leesburg, E of Winchester, an hour from the beltway). Again riverside, boating too, and with a bluegrass music festival [tix full price, w/reductions till Aug 31.
See https://watermelonparkfest.com/

Finally, I've been to the Tidewater VW campout in late August before- 2 yrs ago-- more riverfront, all VW, Does anyone have any info on that event this year? Nothing could beat monthly riverside gatherings-- anyone heading to any, please let me know for tandem travel (after all, who knows when the van might break down {;>0). -pinetreeporsche aka Chris Hager, in Falls Church

One more effort to get info on the Tidewater VWs event that was annually held on the lower Rappahannock in the 20s of August-- IS it happening this year?
I was at the campout in Aug of '16, when there were rumors that the land might be getting sold. Got no info last year, untill after it had been held again and I had missed it. It's about 2 hours south of the DC area.
Anyone know the situation now, for this August- are chances good or not good for this event? -Chris Hager, Falls Church

Found a link on the Tidewater VW Fb site. The text is below, but the photos got lost in my cut-and-paste from there to here. When you go to the Tidewater site and see them you'll probably start packing your van for the trip right now. As fine a lowland camping location as you'll see, and the fire circle, the spirited core-hole tourney, and the boating and swimming options make it a fine trip. And Please: share the Tidewater post, below, w/van-folk all over the region:

Volkswagen Club Of Tidewater (VCOT81)
DUBS ON THE RIVER 2018: A fun filled family oriented weekend. Once again we will be camping on the banks of the Rappahannock River. Event will start on Friday the 17th of August through Sunday the 19th. Remember this is camping in the rough. There will be a port a pot available but bring what you need the nearest store is over 15 miles away. There will of course be a corn hole tournament, kayaking, fishing, swimming and lounging on the river. There will be a fire pit to gather around in the evenings. We know there are those of you who camp with your pets. We ask that if you bring pets that you keep them on a leash at all times. The neighbors have dogs and we need to be respectful of those who live here as well as fellow campers. Please let us know if you plan on attending. The address is 1308 Mothershead Neck Rd. Farnham, Va. 22460, then follow the signs to the River for a great weekend. https://www.facebook.com/events/594017084290442/

I believe that there is no camping fee, or reservations needed. Just show up!

The Tidewater VW facebook site keeps changing - the previous link has a broken link now. So try also
https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=dubs%20on%20the%20river
...and go down 1/2 the page and there'll be the announcement. It originally had a post date of June 17, so if all else fails, run back 7 weeks to that date- should be there.

VA-MD-DC Van owners- This Sunday, May 19, is another chance to gather:
It's the annual (and exclusive) event jointly held by the area's Porsche, Mercedes, Audi and BMW clubs, known as the Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance. No VWs need apply. BUT our VA-MD-DC Vanagon folks have been trying to establish our own annual event, right next to theirs, for several years. Despite a good number of Vanagons and other VW vans in the region, we've had no regular group get-together; a few of us have been hoping to make this become a regular one. There is, after all, a fine irony of (politely) crashing their fancy-car show with our Third-(not-quite-)Annual "VANS in VIENNA" event- just a couple of hundred yards off to the side of their Deutsche Marque event. That last bit, "off to the side", is IMPORTANT-- we DON'T want to try to put our vans out on the grassy field where they have their show and make enemies-- see details below. The DM show draws way over 100 very nice cars (and one Porsche farm tractor last year!)- see their website at http://www.dmconcours.com
Their event is held ON THE GRASS at NOTTOWAY PARK in Vienna (VA), about 10 minutes west of the DC beltway. I think we owners of "Deutsche" vans should have our own Concours d'not-quite-Elegance right next to them, in a friendly and non-confrontational manner. Note that the northeast corner of the large park has a paved basketball court with a generous asphalt parking area big enough for about 20 vans; a couple of times we've had our event there. The DM site has a link to a regional map with the park-- it's just a couple of blocks S of Rt 123 (see map at http://www.dmconcours.com/directions.html)
We'll plan to gather by 9:30. (The DM show starts at 9, and their judging doesn't begin till 10). The modest paved parking lot at the above-mentioned NE corner is normally empty on Sunday morning. We'll plan no judging, no prizes, just swapping tips and a few lies. We can also walk among the ranks of the Elegance cars (and maybe watch to see if a few of their owners will wander over to our little side-show.) As the map shows, Nottoway park is on the S side of Courthouse Rd, which more or less parallels I-66, about a half-mile north of 66 at the Nutley exit. As soon as you see the park sign, on the left/south side of Courthouse Rd. (as you proceed from east to west), turn left/south onto the access road (probably still unpaved dirt) along the east side of the park. Then immediately swing right onto the paved parking area for the basketball court.
I'll put this announcement on the Bay window VA-MD-DC Samba list; not sure there's a VA spot for Splitties or Eurovans. If you know any non-Vanagon van owners, do pass this info along to them. If we have lots of interested folks, and some have the latter part of Saturday (6th) free and WANT TO CAMP OUT, we could meet at Burke Lake Park, about 20 min. south of the Nottaway site, down Rt 123. Or, if anyone wants to do a brunch grill, just bring your cooking ware. Post here if you're interested in camping, and we can use the personal message option to share phone numbers w/other campers.
One more thing: this Sunday is a re-scheduling of the DM clubs' original plan on the 5th that got rained out. If there's a good deal of rain in the several days before this Sunday's DM date but not heavy rain that morning, they will hold their show but NOT use the big grassy field, and instead go into the large paved parking area accessed off Courthouse Rd. by a paved access road on the West side of the grassy field- this to save the grass surface of the park from damage if it's deemed too soft. You'll need to bear to the right at the end of the access road, since the show cars set up on the left half of the lot. The lot is fairly big, but there would be no way for our gang to park in a group. So even if it's being done that way, as it was 2 years ago, come on by anyway if you want to check out their fancy cars and to jaw with some of our gang. And please: if you're likely to attend, post it here so we can get an idea of how big a group to expect. -Chris H. aka pinetreeporsche in Falls Church

I attended a couple of years ago and if you get tired of Vanagons there's plenty of upscale (as they would regard it) German iron to scope out. Don't think I'll be able to make this one.

Report back, on the German car show: Lots of the 4 pricey marques, but no other VW vans on the sideline to swap lies. I'm not sure what we in the DC area nee to do to have a little fun as a group. Campout?-- there are at least 3 really nice close-in campsites within a half hour of DC, and others not much farther out (the easy 3are Burke Lake in Fx County, Little Bennett Park in Montgomery CO MD, and the Prince William Nat'l Forest, down toward Quantico. Has anyone got other ideas for events that can give us a chance to get to know each other?

"Busses on the Canal" Campout at Brunswick MD (5 miles from Harpers Ferry) Nov 6-8! Good weather is forecast!! About an hour 15 min from DC beltway!

The site is the same as the almost-annual Brunswick "Railroad Days" (was skipped this year, - COVID did it), where we've had van gatherings for several years, but this one is just us V-dubs at the Brunswick Family Campground. Below is a direct copy of the original announcement in Sept that never made it to this not-very-active website. (So if you see this, call some of your van friends to spread the news.) And of course if you aren't doing the hike or bike-ride, there's plenty of history to vbe seen in Harpers Ferry, site of the John Brown raid in 1859 that kindled the Civil War, little changed in these 160 years

Copy of original Sept. 18 post on the Samba :
"Buses on the Canal Brunswick Maryland NOV 6-8 2020
Maryland Vanagon Connection presents our first event."

Some Samba-nista who has an Alexandria address put up a notice somewhere else on the Samba Vanagon board about a gathering, I think in Fredericksburg VA although it may have just said Frederick- as in MD. If anyone has it in their sights, please let me know. The DMV needs more van get-togethers.

There is a gathering in VA today.

Most of the gatherings are organized on facebook on the Maryland group, the Virginia group, or the Susquehanna Valley PA group.

Thanks for a response- but about today's event, it would have been nice to know what source had more info. on it. At least, can you give me/us the e-address (or whatever the proper term for them might be) of the fb links to these- the MD, VA, and Susque-PA groups. I might add the Tidewater Fb group, which till last summer had held the fine campout in late Aug on the Rappahannock for at least 5 years in a row. It used to be that this VA-MD-DC message board had a fair amount of stuff on it.
And along that line: after 16 months of rare Van events (the campout at Brunswick last Nov is the only one I heard about), I feel like our area is one of the least active anywhere. If folks can post things on this thread that they have seen elsewhere it might help the metro area vanfolks share more experiences.
