Keep an eye on the classifieds.

There was a complete set posted just a couple days ago and I've had an ad for just the brackets running for a while:

Hi,

Does anyone has the exact measurements of the bracket in the first picture in the first post of this topic?

It is missing in my bus and I would like to make one myself.

Thanks

Stefan

Anyone got any pics or advice?

Thanks

Thanks for this knowledge I have one of each I was wondering why there was a difference

place behind the front seat.

A wing nut and bracket were used on the stud to fasten the wheel in place.

To the best of my knowledge, the shorter bracket was used for 15" wheels and the taller bracket for 14" wheels.

Thanks for this knowledge I have one of each one is wondering why there was a difference

the 15 inch wheel and tire is narrower, that is why the 15 inch bracket is narrower. Once the 14inch wheel came, the bracket needed to be wider. I also saw that the mounting hole is oval, possibly to accommodate both size wheels? the diameter is not the same between 6.40 15 and 7.00 14

Old... but, oh well...

Short one (15") has a 0.5" gap, will get other measurements in a few hours.
Tall one (14") has a 0.75" gap, don't have this one to measure.

Here's for 15" wheel bracket...

Holes are on the same axis... just not sketched that way.
The R = 18 dimension changes from corner to corner (not consistent)... & is larger than the other corners.

T = material thickness
3.6mm = 0.1417"
Closest standard sheet metal thickness is 10 ga @ 0.1345" (9 gauge @ 0.1495")
Steel bar stock standard thicknesses... 1/8" = 0.125" & 3/16" = 0.1875"

regurgitating a little for clarity...
From post #1

To the best of my knowledge, the shorter bracket was used for 15" wheels and the taller bracket for 14" wheels.
The 15" bracket gap is 0.5"
The 14" bracket gap is 0.75"

And from the 14", 15", 16" wheel FAQ thread...
Quote:
On December 19, 1963, chassis # 1222026 (August 5, 1963, chassis # 1145427 for 1 ton models), VW went to a 14" wheel, size 14x5.00

So, the narrow gap bracket was fairly short lived... about two years.
Is that right?... or did pre-'62 bench seat buses use the bracket... but just didn't have the supplied stud (loose bolt)?
Or, did the pre-'62 use something different to secure the spare?... or was it just loose in the spare tire area?

My '61 spare is loose in the spare tire well with no stud there or any sort of bracket.

Does anyone have dimensions for the 14" wheels?
Metal thickness and the height (both side) and width.
depth would be 3/4" gap + metal thickness x2.

Difficult to find one and would try to fabricate one from sheet metal.

Not to beat a dead horse but that foto posted from the owners manual is pretty dark. I have a 67 Doublecab .Does anyone have a pic of how the spare fits with the bracket? It’s not clear how the bracket goes. Does the wheel sit on top of the bracket? Does the long side of the bracket face out? Short side in? What does the short side do, hold the wheel? Pictures would be helpful, thanks much.

From earlier in this thread

Long side nearest wingnut, place the spare in the well, and the "bracket" just goes over the edge of the rim and tighten w/nut to hold. It doesn't go through a lug hole.
