Not really a FAQ, I use these on both my rigs. This is a T181 skid plate.

I use those things all the time, and they've definitely gotten used.
A note, those only fit well on stock cases. They do not fit well on the Autolinea cases as they're just a bit thicker in the fins where they need to groove into.
Jeff, yours looks like its missing the rearmost mount that holds it to the case. Was that to use one of those T1 to T2 adapter plates? _________________ Wash your hands

Finally have gotten round to lift mine back to stock height
from this
to this
Tyres are Maxxis Worm Drive in 27/8.5r14
They rub a bit on full lock as expected, nothing dramatical
What bugs me is the rear on drivers side is exactly 1cm lower than the passengers side.
Not sure when I can be bothered to take it all apart again as you really need to look closely to see it
And just for the record: In my book switching to those tyres will slow you down quite considerably. If you live in the flats you won't mind, if you live in the mountains be prepared to climb every hill you know with a lower gear than before.
You will get used to it it though. And climbing Europes highest was still possible without frying the engine.

Yes Brian, it was on a bug to bus adapted engine. I narrowed it back down though. _________________ I Corinthians 4: 1 thru 5

Nice bus! Looks great both ways, too. Now it's time to build a bigger engine for those hills!
Your un-level rear suspension is a prime example of why just using numbers to adjust and align the suspension only works well in theory. In reality, this old stuff needs a bit of coaxing to get it just right. Since yo have recently it all apart back there, it will be pretty easy to take it apart for another adjustment. All of the bolts will easily spin free, and the layout is fresh in your mind. _________________ nothing |

Yup. Mine was 24 on pass, 22 on driver’s. Set both sides to 25.4, once on the ground and settled the left was an inch lower than the right, had to go in and tweak it again. _________________ 1979 Transporter (sold)

Saw this picture on the webs:
Anyone know what wheels those are? Looks like a perfect setup to get a little more ground clearance without a lift kit. This is the only pic I can find of this bus. |

^ I replied in the other thread too...
Don't know what those are, but if your looking for something like that, GoWesty offers some 15" and 16" steelies with the correct pattern and center bore to fit late Busses and Vanagons. I think they currently out of stock though (at least last I looked). _________________ Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2006

Those look great on your bus. Are you running the ET37 ones? The first link you provided listed theirs at ET30.
Are you getting any rubbing at all front or back? Full lock to full lock? |

The first link is where I think the picture above got their steels from, could be wrong but they look like the Mefro ones.
I'm running the et37 merc ones on my bus, they have been offroad quite a few times and not had any problems, even down to 12psi |

Are those 15" wheels? 215/75?
I found that Jetta wheels are the same bolt pattern as the Bus, 5x112 and Im getting the steelies for 10 dlls a piece.
Mi bys is a 69 hightop and I will lift it both front and back |

Realized I never put the almost-finished product in here. KBYs, 25.4* rear, stock front, Achilles tires, old school 100w spots up front, LED floods front and back (added after these pics taken), LED headlights, gravel guards, CB & 2m FM, crappy body work 🤪.

Crossing Hermosa Creek in 2017 during my event, 4CORE. Over 25 buses that year spanning 50 years of production. The event drew people from as far away as Kansas and Oklahoma. Even Dave Cook drove out from Manhattan, Kansas.

We’ll be meeting up for 4CORE and crossing the same creek this summer. But, this year we are going to Telluride and will be wheeling on the Last Dollar Trail. [/youtube] _________________ __________
