So I have apparently gained some weight during Covid lockdowns because when I tried closing my pop top the black handle (rivots and all) ripped out of top. Is there a way to fix this? Would it require removing/tearing apart the top? Should I abandon the handle for another mechanism to pull to top down into a locked position?

That looks like a rivnut. I only know this because I installed an awning this summer. Iím not super familiar with these things but I think you could either reseat a new one or a slightly larger size.

This is relatively common on the Winnie tops.

I would try the next size larger of a riv nut.
