Is there a slick/reliable fix for a broken terminal on a PICT-30 choke? I can figure something out, but imagine that someone here has done something clean. Just trying to save 28 bucks.
Also, is there a way to tell if this is indeed a 6V choke? I see that WW has a explicitly-stated 6V choke for a PICT-28, and a 12V choke for PICT-30 and up (haven't found a PICT-30 6V new replacement yet).
Thanks. _________________ 16 9

Please do post your findings if you end up confirming that the CIP 6v choke fits the PICT 30. Replacing mine and was a little put off by WW’s reference to just the 28. Ended up going with a NOS item from someone here on the Samba after they were kind enough to take some measurements for me. Hoping it works, but if not, it would be good to know the CIP choke would fit. _________________ ‘60 Kombi, The “Bob Dowell Van” |

Does the rivet spin at all?, if not (or if you can hold it) drill and tap for a tiny machine screw (~4-40", or metric?) to attach a new terminal. I've also seen some soldered on that seemed to work. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I had a contact broken off on the '74 Bay Window. Tried solder and drilling it. Likely spun it and broke it internally. Bought a new one, which is another story - bought two on eBay before getting the correct one. Works well now. I recommend just buying a new one if you can find the right one. |

If you wire brush and clean the copper rivet and the broken brass piece really well then you could use a coil terminal cleaned and wire brushed real well and solder it to the rivet. Use a super hot gun and rosin core thin electronics solder. I'm betting it would last quite a while like that. The male prong needn't protrude the same direction i.e. topward would be fine. |

Just to clarify the small vs large diameter choke heater from what I have observed.
Early 28pict vs later 28pict and 30pict diameters comparison. Early on right.
Early 28pict small diameter carb tops have a piston prone to clogging that operates the override rotation. The diameter of the element is 1 1/4".
Later 28pict and 30pict carbs had a vacuum diaphragm to override rotation and are reliable. The diameter of the element is 1 3/8".
All tops are interchangeable across all 28-30pict styles.
I've seen both in 6volt and 12 volt with the small diameter in 12volt ultra rare.

Usually the one-rivet heaters are 6volt. |

Great info Barry, thanks.
I was able to solder this as some have suggested. Removed the old terminal artifacts, cleaned up well, and managed to create a pretty good bond. Will see if it holds up for my short term need of getting this engine running.
I got a response back from Wolfsburg West today confirming that the 6V choke listed as PICT-28 also works for the PICT-30. Per Barry's post above, looks like they have a "late" PICT-28 offering.

If that solder gives way you can try silver solder.
It looks like your choke bracket is missing the three spacers like this.

I do have those, just hard to see in my pic.
Looks like WW added "PICT-30" to that description. 👍 _________________ 16 9
