gas tank question

Has anyone replaced the stock gas tank with a different one?
I would like to get more than 240 miles between fill ups
Ive read through many past forum posts and there does not seem to be a definitive answer
I was thinking that a larger capacity tank can be used in lieu of the stock
My thoughts are:
1 The overflow tanks could be eliminated
2 A larger cap tank could be used (wouldnt need the the depression in the center)
3 Would make the fuel line arrangement cleaner and easier to replace (fill, vent, supply and return)
Any thoughts on this?

The easiest path is to put an AUX tank in line with your existing one, don't mess with the Evap system other than to work a vent on the new AUX tank, and plumb to the stock system. Support it between the frame rails, keep it away from cables and piping. The saddle design works for the Vanagon since you can run the existing cables and etc between the tanks with that large depression in the middle. So, a similar design further back that Tees into the stock tank seems pretty easy.

There was the person who made a custom tank to fit above the Transaxle in that empty space there. I'm guess you read that post already

There is a larger capacity fuel tank out there. It might be from the south African market. The one I saw required cutting the rear chassis brace to make room and then an alternate section for the longer tank straps you will also need.

I wasn't impressed.

I don't know why they say this is 'syncro only' other than needing a little more creativity for the 2wd filler to share between 2 tanks.

240mi range is just fine.. stop for another coffee. and you'll need a restroom too.

I run a 9gal tank mounted on the spare tire clamshell. but that's not off the shelf
though I didn't have any other modification aside from relocating the spare tire.

wasn't it furry little otter who remade the oem tank?
and shagginwaggen has a DIY custom saddle tank..

You didn't say whether you are syncro or 2WD. If 2WD, just add a Syncro tank over the tranny and you will get over a 500 mile range.

do note that to add a Syncro tank to a 2wd you will need to lower the engine & transmission by 2inches.
it's ok since you have to remove the trans to install the tank anyways.
and add in the tank mounting panel & straps
and the syncro filler. pipe & inlet box.
iirc the pipe is getting harder to come by.

get gas more often
especially when you know it's going to be a stretch till the next pump

or strap a carry can on the roof like everyone out west does.

adding to this conversation fwiw it's not off the shelf either. there's DIY installation requirements.
the greasecar round tank will fit in the clamshell, resting on a rubber pads and strapped to the clamshell.
