For years I noticed on the rear of VW, and Audi using 2.0-T Engines logos. As time went on they went from the small cars into the larger Audi and VW.
2017 Beetle 170 hp to 292 in the Golf R, Honda R 306HP
I counted about 10 mfg., GM, Ford BMW. Etc
What I read it has a lot to do with size weigh and power.

A lot of non-US countries have additional taxes base on engine displacement, and seating arrangements. A CC with a 2.0 4cyl would have less taxes than an R8 with a 5.2 V10.
And it’s more than likely coming this way with no opposition in Congress..... |

My 2l Audi came with 272bhp and is more to tax than a 2l Audi that came from the factory with 170bhp.

Except for our historic aircooled VWs which now pay zero annual tax based on age being over 40 years old.
If they were actually taxed on emissions - at 20mpg that works out at supercar tax rates, or about £600 a year plus the duty on the petrol..
And because the aircooled VWs are old, we now even have the luxury of not having to have the MOT emissions and safety test.
My 2004 Peugeot 2.0HDI diesel is actually 1999cc. To keep below car purchase tax band levels in the UK and Europe. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

I've been eyeballing the 2.0L Atlas for an upgrade for the wife. We've had a 2013 CC 2.0L since new but I like the easier access and 8 passenger ability of the Atlas as we get into the senior years. _________________

Guys,
I appreciate the explanation as to why their is that many 2.0 and 2.0-T from a Taxation point of view
It is the mechanics of the engines, that I am interested in.
What mods were made to these 2.0 engine that increased the HP and Torque to change the basic 2.0 that was a big deal on the Golfs to the same cc engines that can be in much larger vehicles that are expected to be used every day and go well over 100k with just basic maintenance.
What are the head differences, engine blocks. Sure all are Fuel Injected, most likely double over head cams.

Modern technology, materials and massive boost. Today off the assembly line cars make the same power as tuned street cars did 10-15 years ago, only within the strict limitations of emission. You can say that the hot rod people made some R&D for the factories without knowing it.

I read an article years ago ( don't remember where ) that said that BMW had done a lot of testing, and found that the 1/2 litre size cylinder was the most efficient for some reason. Yes you made me think back when installing a turbo was for only good for a short period of time before it disintegrated from over heating till, If I remember correctly ceramics were used. After that manufactures started installing them, in some of their vehicles and not without problems, till as we know now they got it right. . Prior to that yes it was the Hot Rod guys experimenting to push the limits.
There was a point were the race was on between supercharges and turbo charges.
We know who won, at the time I was for Supercharger, I know less power but it was a bit more stable, for daily drivers at the time. No turbo lag, but the power was not for free, your engine used power to turn it.
Turbos in cars that were not designed for them with rerouting the exhaust was major heating issues. Well they did it and even got around emissions. _________________ email: [email protected]

funny you said that, the one warning when I was putting in a new head gasket, was not to open any of the FI hoses to see if I was getting fuel.
He said the pressure was so high It could blast in to and maybe thru my body. That is bad enough, an injection of diesel fuel would not be to healthy.
I knew nothing about diesels, were was the combustion chambers??? The heads were flat. Then I found out the thickness of the head gaskets was the thickness of the combustion chambers. I think there were 3 thicknesses but they did not have the one I needed. So they gave me one that was thinner. He said it may make it harder to start in cold weather but I just in creased the HP.
22 to 1 compression ratio. Standard, no clue what I did made it. _________________ email: [email protected]

Yup
Edit, 165bar is what mine is since tuning.
135bar is standard.
Next gen I think that's quite the hyperbole.
Fuel isnt compressible, so when you crack a line you get a little squirt, but it's over in a fraction of a second. Different story though if you get a leak when the engine is running I'm sure

Bug guy 165bar is 2393 psi. you can pump up a big bike tire.
Ok Serious, UK, you may be right, but I was not about to take any chances after I put in the gasket and was off on the timing and crushed a lifter and made an egg shape out our my lifter bore..
At that time Diesel heads were expensive, a friend of mine who was a master machinist looked at the hole and said get another lifter ( $10 ) put it in the hole, use a blunt nail punch with a hammer and start at a distances and keep beating the aluminum around the hole till it hits the lifter. It looked like hell, he said don't worry I do it all the time. I would say only 80% was touching the lifter. The engine had 30 k on it after 130k more miles the case cranked, nothing to do with the lifter.
Amazing simple engine, having to wait for the glow plug was a bummer on a sub freezing morning till I put in a freeze plug electric engine heater.

Some do, some don't.
The Audi EA engine block family was all the same dimensions.
There are differences but just details, overall a if you had a rabbit, diesel, or a 1.8 turbo block next to eachother they look almost the same.
heads are completely different but the blocks are almost the same.
If it's strong enough to be a diesel then no wonder they can handle 20lbs of boost. |
