George Whitmore, legendary El Capitan climber, dies at 89:
From the LA Times
George Whitmore, a member of the first team of climbers to scale El Capitan in Yosemite National Park and a conservationist who devoted his life to protecting the Sierra Nevada, has died at age 89.

Whitmore died on New Year’s Day from complications of COVID-19, said his wife, Nancy. She said Whitmore, a cancer survivor, was extremely careful about wearing a mask and his family doesn’t know where he contracted the coronavirus. He tested positive for COVID-19 on Dec. 13, after developing a rattling but occasional cough and subsequent fever.

Whitmore died in a Fresno rehabilitation facility from damage to his lungs about a week after being released from a hospital, his wife said.

Friends, family, colleagues and fellow climbers mourned the passing of a legend in the world of rock climbing and the last surviving member of the trio that was the first to reach the top of El Capitan on Nov. 12, 1958. Ascending the 3,000-foot sheer granite rock wall that now attracts climbers from around the world was, at the time, a feat considered out of human reach.

Sad week for Dodger fans...

Tommy Lasorda, Dodgers icon, dead at 93

https://nypost.com/2021/01/08/tommy-lasorda-dodgers-icon-dead-at-93/

He was released from the hospital Tuesday, raising hopes. Perhaps it was the opposite.

R.I.P., Tommy, we all bleed Dodger blue today.

I am happy he lived to see another Dodger World Series championship, along with Vinny.

He was the spark plug and human genius that built the Dodgers into a TEAM.

And the genius behind the '88 clutch Kirk Gibson homer in all its drama.

There has been no bigger cheerleader for the team. Ask any umpire.

Ed Bruce is legendary especially in South Texas. He was quite an accomplished guy.......who you were always going "whos that" He wrote songs, sang many, acted and really kept busy in the 1970s. Everybody that was in Texas during the 70s, including me, really tried to live up to his many songs. He will be missed.

One of the last surviving "Spitfire Women", who ferried aircraft to the front line in World War Two, has died.
Eleanor Wadsworth, who was 103, was part of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), a civilian service that transported fighter aircraft and crew.

Not necessarily a celebrity, but Helen Viola Jackson died a couple weeks ago at age 101. She "married" a Civil War veteran in 1936 when she was 17 (he was 93). She was a neighbor girl looking after him because he was in frail health and in the Depression, he wanted her to have his Union pension benefits after he died. According to the account, they were never intimate and she never remarried. She also never wanted to collected on the pension. Sad... Sad Most likely the last link to anyone from that era...

Tim Lester, a former NFL fullback who played eight seasons between 1992 and 1999, died Tuesday from coronavirus complications. He was 52.

Lester played for the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys. With the Steelers, he became known as "The Bus Driver" because his task was to block for star running back and eventual Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis.
