Jan '52 manual shows the skinny star coil.

Shows the smooth top one for the Oct '52 Zwitter manual.

There is a coil thread here from the Split Bug FAQ at the top of this Forum section that may help:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=260107

It looks like it's a
TE 6 A3
from that thread?

I would read the thread though to be sure.

Unfortunately they reused older pictures for the owners manuals unless there a good enough reason to take new pictures.

That same picture is used in the Sep 1951 manual so it is meaningless as a data point for what would be used on a Jan 1952 car. The same picture may have been used even earlier but I haven't checked.

This picture is from a Sep 1952 road and track and shows a split dash '52 that clearly shows a non star coil. The picture would have been taken at least several months earlier due to lead times to produce publications back then. This car was owned by Competition Motors, North Hollywood, CA. In the article it is stated that the car had 6000 miles on the clock.

It could have been replaced but given when it was taken, if it was replaced then VW was already supplying non star coils as spare parts probably middle of '52.

The OP also didn't specify what month '52. Zwitters definitely wouldn't have star coils but it appears based on the picture above that the switch was made at some point during pre zwitter '52 production

Coils have date stamps, I have never seen or heard a starcoil with a later stamp than very early 1951.

Where can I find the date stamp on a star coil? I have a star coil, but can't find the date.

Its on the mounting bracket on one side, near the hole. Sometimes you have look hard for and scrape or media blast a bit.

Thanks for the quick reply. I found a hexagon with 73 inside. That's not the date code is it?

btw Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Found it. It looked like a rust spot, but after sanding it down it started to look more like a date code. It's clear that mine is also from 1950 (F), but the month could be either 3 or 5. Thank you very much for your help!
