I like that idea regarding the placement of your fan remote. I think you'll find that you want to have it handy up front when driving. Sometimes you get stuck in traffic and it's nice to be able to whoosh in some air.
We lost the remote, buried somewhere under camping gear, on a trip last summer. It was extremely frustrating.

I added remote power door locks and a kill switch relay system.
This bus originally had power door locks but the wiring as usual was flaky and I did not want to rely on it to work well, and I also wanted to add the remote kill switch option. I opted for this aftermarket system based on feedback on other samba topics.

The system appears very well made and complete.
Because the front doors already had power locks they were ready to accept the new power lock units. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the new units had the exact same mounting hole dimensions and unit size as the original one. It was literally a matter of removing two screws to swap the units. Then use the new wiring harness for the connections.
I was able to use the original harness grommet into the door but had to make a new hole and add a grommet to get the new harness thru the hole into the cab. If the fuse panel and wiring was not so crowded I might have been able to feed it along the original harness.
The sliding door had been replaced by myself earlier with a door that happened to not have had power locks. As a result it did not have the power pick up or the mount and rod for the power door system. I was able to swap in the parts from the previous door (which had power locks but was damaged) and craft a mount for the door lock actuator so it came out the same as the original configuration. I used a dremel cut off to create the needed slot for the power pick up piece.
The remote comes with a relay designed to be put in line with the starter solenoid wire (red/black) from the ignition switch. When the remote is used to lock the doors the relay will cut power to the solenoid wire and the starter will not work. If the doors are unlocked with the remote the relay is disabled and the starter will work. If the doors are operated manually the relay holds the last position from the remote. (There is a manual over ride switch hidden if necessary if the system craps out.)
Now I can walk away from the bus and use the remote to lock the doors (I did not include the rear hatch) and the bus has the kill switch armed. I am very happy with this system.

The past couple weeks I have been working on the door front panels, new speakers, and a new radio.
The door panels are water damaged but the vinyl material is basically in good shape.
I fully soaked the backing fiberboard, placed many layers of newspapers on the garage floor (to absorb the water during compression), jacked up the front wheel, set the door panel onto the floor with a board under the wheel and let down the tire. That should be about 1000 pounds on the door panel.
I let it sit for a few days to take on a less wavy shape.
I removed the first one and did the other door panel the same way.
After allowing the panels to dry inside the house for a week it was time to install the new speakers.
These seem to work fine for me and they fit the stock location.

I use the cover from the original speakers by cutting it off with a dremel cut off wheel.
New speaker next to original.
Cut off the cover.
Now you can mount the new speaker from the back of the door panel and the cover from the front.
And done!

The size is overkill but it is a very fine stranded wire with a supple silicone like cover so I think it will hold up to the bending cycles in the doors, at least I hope so.
I added new vapor barrier plastic to the front doors.
Installed the freshly cleaned door panels.
Looking much better!
Then I installed this radio.

This unit was recommended by Hans for me since it is also for the European bands. And I definitely wanted bluetooth.
Another nice feature of this type of unit is that it has no CD or media deck so the unit is only about 1/2 the depth of the stock radio. That leaves plenty of room for the wiring and other stuff back in the dash... 
All is working nicely.

I used 1 mil painters plastic because that it what I had in the house. 4 mil would have been more durable but I had none on hand.
For the speaker cups I used a quart ziploc bag with the zip portion cut off. Double sided tape to attach the vapor barrier to the door and the speaker bag to the hole I made in the barrier for the speaker.

It comes with a bunch of attachment options. I find that using the available Vanagon posts and adding a point or two did just fine.
I have used this type of netting on our '87 Westy for a decade and it is awesome for things like chip bags, paper towel roll, tissues, grocery bags, towels, clothes, whatever the heck you want to shove in there.
