I believe the pieces under the door pull rod are actually a felt/ sound deadening type material. It might be called jute (?)

Also, are you putting the tar board material back in that is glued to the door?

It’s looking great so far! I think you might have the nicest T3 ever when your done!

Work done got busy on me again.
Can only jump over and do a little this or that for the last few days.

Just had to pull those terrible, horrible, no-good OG-style door seals off.
Found myself wailing in frustration every time i touched a door.
Wences is coming by soon for buff, and it's just inappropriate for the doors to be all pooched out like that..
Thinking they are probably Way-Too-Fucking-Stiff rather than the wrong dimensions.
They woulda been SO perfect if made of more flexible material..

Whee! Let's clean up some glue!

Going to try the ISP thinner/softer seals again.
This time, I'm going to do some pie-cuts and sectioning to make them fit better.
Got a few tubes of that glue 'djway' recommended.
Hope springs eternal.

Having seals out seems like the only way to really setup latches right.
Especially when a car is all frankensteined like mine.

And this is with the striker plate as far 'out' away from the car as it will go!

Putting thicker shims under the rubber striker wedge kept it from going over-center like that so much.
Also going to have to try and figure out how to draw that rear fender in a bit more.
Have some ideas.. Maybe Wences will too..




Derek 'nogoodwithusernames' and his Dad do 3d printing and CAD work.
They have agreed to start getting some files worked up to make molded carpet trim parts.

Cut the pieces free from the old carpets i had and got them into a box.

Interesting how these are made..

Managed to get Lenny on the phone to discuss carpets.
He's a funny one that guy, any of you who know him can attest..

His carpets are indeed just bound with no molded parts.
Also doesn't do any vinyl binding like factory..
He does have good accurate patterns and doesn't need your car there to sell a carpet.
He also would be willing to sell me a carpet set sans binding.
So that will probably be the way i go;
Get a black wool squareweave T3 carpet set cut.

Need to find a carpet place that can do accurate vinyl binding,
Some velcro,
And figure out these molded trim parts..

Hey,
If TMI can do their incorrect molded trim parts,
Figuring out a way to do the right ones shouldn't be too awful hard.

Friendly advice: Don't even bother with door and lid final adjustments until the seals are in. It's just wasted time. Trust me.

Then, be aware that adjusting the strikers on your doors is somewhat counterintuitive- sometimes moving in the opposite direction than seems logical gives better results.

Let us know how the ISP seals work out. ALL of the new "German" door seals seem to be pretty much fucked.

Have you ever seen a heat seamer that is used for door panels or carpet grommets?
It’s a rectangular rod that is a resistor. It is shaped as needed, brought up to temp then the plastic and carpet are melted together. If you want that look you most likely will have to make your own seamer.
I used that glue you have pictured to make my own spark plug hole filler’s. They lay flat so you really don’t see them. The rubber rips before you can get the glue bond to tear.
I also agree that you shouldn’t waste time adjusting without the seal in place.

I'd like to go on record that if you are going to setup some crappy aftermarket door striker rubber wedges,
That this 'no seals' step might just be needed.
In The Bible, it shows using shims to remove the 'up 'n down' movement of the wedge/striker when closed in the latch.
However...
With these new rubber wedges being a bit small, and a shim in (on a new part -groan-) the 'up 'n down' might be 'tight", but when the door is closed, there is still a lot of movement.
The aftermarket rubber wedges are the wrong shape, and need a bit more shim than just taking up the slack.

Also,
With my car being in a big 'ol wreck and all,
It's good to have the seal out of the way and watch the latch and striker mate cleanly.
It was feeling like there was a shim needed -behind- the striker plate, and the latch wasn't hitting home without scraping the side.
But it wasn't thankfully..
It's the latch being 'scrapey'.. Not sure why..

So there you have it.. Anal anality on a car that should have been totaled..


ANyways...
Every time i turned around to finish anything, something needed painted first.
Got stuck stopped enough times now that it was time to break out the gun.

Unfortunately, its February, have to paint outside, and it's raining.
Weather forecast called for a 'warm' couple of days, so i decided to shoot the tube..

Wet-sanded my powder coat FAIL on the spare bucket.

Not just a Ghetto-Ass Paint Booth.
A HEATED Ghetto-Ass Paint Booth...!

Trying to get enough warmth into the epoxy and high-build..

Also did some epoxy, high-build, and spot putty on the stealth 3d printed low-profile oil fill Derek made for me.
We'll see if the stuff sticks..

Hoping it gets warm enough,
The wind stays down,
And it doesn't rain hard today..

Might shoot a bit o' paint?

Hey progress is progress, I haven't been out working on mine in a couple weeks aside from driving it around town a bit. Need to go poke Mario at the Dub Shop and get him to send me my custom pulley and trigger wheel for a T4 with AC.

That oil fill should paint nicely, it's printed out of carbon filled nylon. Probably a bit over kill for a glorified funnel

Most of a day yesterday off and on..

Got some black paint shot while the weather cooperated.
All of these are a full win.
Now i can finish installing decklid, rear fenders, fuel pump switch, and battery cutoff.

This coulda come out better.
This outside looks OK but i ran the inside really bad.
It'll need sanded and shot again.

This stuff will get sanded and shot red today with any luck.
Will also use a small brush to touch up motor and wheel nicks.

Yeah, been a while..

It's just really hard to keep motivated on this thing right now.
All of these things that suck, and repeated tries just don't chase the suckiness out of them..
When multiple tries just make things worse, like with those window scraper trims,
That's when i go and do something else for a while.

Three tries so far with assembling doors;
Third set of felt tracks coming; Ghia tracks this time.

Third try with door seals; first ISP, then German, now ISP again.

Really hate that decklid seal, it'll need another and a re-install.

When you're trying to decide which parts to use, and it's hard to decide which one sucks the least (if there's a choice),
Or you have to just run a sucky one, because there's no other choice,
It kinda gets hard to keep at it, dig?


So i get distracted by building another engine..

Big thanks to Trevor for helping me track down the pin locks i need.

Weather got nice enough yesterday for me to do some paint stuff.
Sanded out all the runs from my tire bowl for my what, fourth or fifth try at that fucking thing.. :fist:

Nicks i put in wheels had been touched up with base and then several coats of clear.
They got wet-sanded and buffed up thru the grits.
You can see the repairs if you look closely, but good enough no doubt.

This sure came out nice,
Especially for being shot outside.
No need for cut/buff; straight out of the gun.

Still trying to talk Wences into coming by one last time.
He's sicker of this car than i am for sure.


Anyways, I'm still trying to put this thing together right before i go to driving it around.
Because I know myself by now.
Any corners cut, or things left un-done, will stay that way once the car starts getting driven.

No way I'll ever decide to go back in and re-do the doors or anything like that once it's together.

No way in hell..

And so the embarrassingly slow build drags along at a painfully slow pace.

Here was a whole day's effort.

Started off with another trip to the paint store,
Only a couple hunnert bux this time.
Bought a cheapo three-gun set for primer and epoxy use, as the old ones are finally dead.
Plus some more compound #2, more paper, etc.

That led to some assembly while it warmed up enough to paint.

Battery project got done done.
Long enough black cable,
and some spacers underneath the lid/cover, so it don't smash the battery when tightened.
Two rust rugs inside there to clear bolts...
Plus, i stabbed my painted switch handle.
Done done.

Glovebox needed the spring that holds it open.
Dug forever to try and find it; still no luck.
Know it's here somewhere; seen it for sure..
Noticed the screws and washers had bad paint, so they got taken off, wire-wheeled, blasted and painted.
Once the screws and spring are in, glovebox project is done if the gauge even works or not!
See also registration and insurance papers..

Finally warmed up enough for some black paint.
Extra motor parts squirted while gun was out.

Despite the massive global extinction of insects from climate change,
Wouldn't you know it, one of the LAST fruit flies in California found my paint.

Had fits with this new gun Wences gave me at first..
It was just spitting and leaving orange peel.
Had to make these feeble spitty passes to get material down.
Cleaning the gun all frustrated and pissed, i cranked open the air pressure inlet to blast it clean with thinner,
And,
Whadda ya know,
It started flowing real nice after that..
Duh. (insert rubber chicken)

Hope my Brother Man the Hero of the Story can come by one last time..

Left front fender didn't get buffed, and my attempts to buff it are pretty damn sorry.
Don't know what I'm doing wrong, it it's damn wrong whatever it is..
