Yes, this is a simple way to wake up a tired 1200 and have extra juice from it. You can have a peppy one if you do what I have mentioned earlier. But just the big bore kit, some stock or performance ratio rockers (stock 1200 has 1:1, 1.3-1.6 has 1.1:1), and a good exhaust will make a great engine that pulls as good as a 1600 _________________ '54 vintage speed beetle slow project

I've always wondered how a big bore 40hp with 1.1 rockers, a header/extractor exhaust and a little bigger carburetion (say 30 pict 1) stacks up to a 1500 or 1600.
My '65 engine is as described above and pulls pretty good in my '59 bug, but I've not driven a 1500 or 1600 car since my late teens (52 y/o now) so I have no point of reference. |

I had that exact engine with a little bigger than stock cam in my 61 beetle for about ten years. I then put a stock 1600 single port with the same style header. The big bore 40hp had a slight edge, not enough to justify what it would cost to build now. A 1300-1600 base engine is more cost effective and has much more potential. If building a Vintage Speed engine for the visual, costs and less power don't count/matter _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

Ah crap. Those were not available when I was rebuilding mine in 2015. .
I find the 1200 a little underpowered and did not realize until I tore it down that the spigots were 90mm.
This will be the simplest way forward.

So that’s been solved, have a look at this thread from ‘engine/ transmission’ forum.

It sounds alarmist but it is a good read about what to check for when using those piston/cylinder sets. I think mostly they are ok.
Check your deck heights because there might be a difference in pin heights between your old pistons and the replacements.
Good luck with your build!
