If your car didn't need it the Germans wouldn't have put it there.

Yes, if the brake adjuster detent spring is broken the adjuster stars can turn and back the shoes away from the drum as you drive. If yours are broken, they can and should be replaced. Remove both star adjusters from the block, use a punch or chisel to drive the old broken spring out of its slot in the adjuster block, seat the new adjuster spring fully in place in the block slot, then peen the edges of the block on either side of the center of the spring to fix the spring in place. When satisfied that the spring is firmly held in place in the block, lube and reinsert the adjusters into the block then reassemble the brake and adjust the shoes.

I have just gone through this with my ‘60. I did a brake job and noted that all 4 leaf springs were broken at the ends. Put things back together and discovered that they are necessary and need to be replaced. Actually 6 of the 8 stars seemed to hold their adjustment ok. The other 2, both front, needed 5 turns to get them back to proper adjustment after about 80 miles of driving. They are there for a reason. That job is next on the agenda.

Plenty of room to put a 6-32 hold down screw. Lock washer and Loctite.
