that is another killer company bus. one of the best. loving the color combo, coachbuild trim, rack and script fond.

Hi guys - i haven't been visiting thesamba in a while - but to bring some light into this case...

These buses were modified by coachbuilder Gottlob Auwärter in Stuttgart-Möhringen.
As so often, this pic first showed up on Facebook on 1st of January 2021 and then was spread throughout Social Media and the web.
And as always - people did not give credit or ad any information on that pic and so a lot of knowledge got lost.

Original source: This facebook post of a page called "Automobil-Park Auwärter" - posting a bunch of pics from the Neoplan Archive.
(Additional note: The Gottlob Auwärter Company existed since 1935 - but from 1953 on they used the brand Neoplan to build Omnibuses with self-supporting bodies.)

If you look at all the pics on that mentioned FB post above, you will notice some similarities on bigger, coachbuilt travel buses to this special VW Bus.
And there is also a pic of another - much bigger MHZ vehicle which even wears the Gottlob Auwärter badge on the side.

See this pic:

Type: MB L 3500 (311/312)
Source: Neoplan Archive / Automobil-Park Auwärter (Facebook Page)

Detail pic of the Gottlob Auwärter badge (as seen on the vehicle above - next to the rear wheel on the right side)

I hope this helped. And i also hope the pic of the other non-VW truck doesn't get deleted here, as i uploaded it on thesamba itself :/

Cheers,
Alex

Great info, Alex !
Isn't it also Auwärter who converted some buses to panoramic plexi glass roof bubble? like the one that was found at the Messerli junkyard in Switzerland ?

I think that was an Ernst Auwärter Bus.

Thank you for the clarification, Randolf. I did an internet search and yes they were different companies ! Ernst Auwärter was located a bit south of Stuttgart in Steinenbronn while his brother Gottlieb had his company in S Möhringen, only 2km apart. Obviously they both specialised in converting or building omnibuses.
The Auwärter 'carlux' panoramic VWT1 were built by Ernst's. whereas the coachbuilt racks and trim on the MHZ buses were made by Gottlieb's.

For sure, no gas door and Barndoor mirror arm on, what appears to be, drivers side. Passenger mirror arm is later.

I think the middle two buses on the right are both barndoors.
The Deluxe and the cargo van.

And taken in the same locale as the extended highroof barndoor photo above.
I'm guessing that the church was damaged in WWII.

The deluxe you can see the rear hatch handle and if you look below the belt line trim on the right side you can obviously see a crack in the body line between the rear hatch and the corner and for the panel van clearly does not have trapezoid rear window...

thats the Berliner Frauenkirche. WWII damage left as a memorial to this day.
I think that the panel van to the right is a BD, that has been modernized with a different bumper and rear window cut in. Can't spot a gap where a post BD hatch and lid would be.

I agree that I think the only Barndoor is the Panel on the right.

I don't see any evidence of a rear hatch either.
Those look like bubble taillights to me.

I can't explain the rear window.
Updated could make sense.

Not quite.
Berlin yes, Frauenkirche no. It's the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church).

The Frauenkirche is located in Munich.

There are lots of churches called Frauenkirche in Germany. The well known Frauenkirche, damaged in WWII is located in Dresden and is now rebuilt.
