I have a 1974 181 MX. Missing the Fed Safety Decal on the pillar drivers side. You can see where it was. Cut and scraped out. OG green paint, not painted over. Not sure why it was removed. Giving me a pain to CA regi. Matching VINs. Came from AZ.
Any help appreciated. TSVWSD |

Dave at Industrial Design works made one for me about 6 months ago and it looks great. Note that the dots will be printed rather than punched out, but otherwise it looks identical to the original.

Dougster43 -
Dave got promptly back to me. Question - Do you know where I find the production month of 181?
Appreciated. Tod SD |

Unless you can find and contact a Thing owner with a vin# close to your it might be hard. One thing you can do is look at this list, see where your vin fits and go from there: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/vins_type_181/Page1.jpg _________________ Supposed to be 77käfer, but there are no umlauts on an american keyboard

If you think your Thing has never been painted, you should find the date of manufacture behind the passenger headlight. |

Good suggestions here. My sticker was missing and my car had been painted so I had the same issue. My VIN number was only about 120 units behind the March 1 production on the chart so I assumed a 3/73 date. |

Does anyone know how to read the VIN numbers as far as the number of units produced? Going by the list in the link, 1973 started off with VIN 183 2000 001 and shows 183 3026 058 being made in September of that year. Obviously there weren’t 1 million Things made, but is there a way to tell how many were made between these two dates? I more or less am curious to know were my own Thing comes in. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters
