What is the small plastic (expansion?) tank that sits below the drivers' seat right next to the nut for the seat belt bolt that sits on the wheel well? I want to put a backing plate down there for the rusted area around the seat belt nut under there. An '84 Westy.

They are the expansion tanks for the fuel tank venting system. _________________ 1982 Westfalia AEB 1.8t

Should be one on each side 2wd. Always best to drop them down to check the vent grommets. They drop out fairly easily. Going back in, you really need to wire brush the cavity in the fender where the tank seats. Some silicone spray and patience. Do not try to pull the hoses off or use a cut off wheel to cut the small clamp. Sharp side cutters for the clamps and a razor blade to split the hose. The nipples are way to easy to break or melt. _________________ ☮️ |

So I need to cut the clamps?
Why do I split the hose? So I can see if the vents are clear and not clogged?
Sorry for not getting the big picture of what I'm going to do here.
Thanks, Mark _________________ Grateful daily,

If you are dropping it out of the way, you can leave the bottom hoses attached. If you find the top grommet has failed. It’s best to completely remove the tank and wash the inside with soap and water.
Main goal is to not damage the little plastic hose barbs at the bottom. If you are welding, those tanks are connected directly to the top of the gas tank and could be full of fuel vapors. That can get exciting if you introduce a spark. _________________ ☮️ |
