Engine number was erased - what to do?

It's a dune buggy with VIN 6221836 (model '64?) but the engine number was removed. Is there a way to know what was the engine number? Thanks.

Post a picture of it. No number could mean a replace ment case or engine built from scratch. Also check the top case parting seam, a type 3 case has it engine number there, these cases can be built into an upright engine too

Because it is a Dunebuggy it could have any engine when they built the kit and the VIN number has no code as to what the engine number should be.

Since VW did incremental changes over many years, it is quite easy to bolt on parts from many different years. The engine number, especially on a dune buggy, is practically useless.

Yep......numbers nearly useless as stated.

If you had the very last air cooled beetle imported into the usa......it would be 45 years old........and had been rebuilt with whatever was laying around 3 or 4 times by now.

On top of all that.....you have aput together car with all the mechanical coming from doner scrap cars.
So you will have a hodge podge of multiple years and aftermarket pieces from several decades.

Your best bet is pictures of certain details and they guys here can help put you in an era of production.

Replacement engines and engine cases did not have a number stamped back in the day. The mechanic replacing the engine was supposed to transpose the number from the old to the new. It seldom happened.

For instance......if you were to look up the numbers stamped in my engine case.....it would be a 1985 honda goldwing. And to top that....even if you actually had a year model for the vw case it still would not help you get time up parts as all the ignition is aftermarket parts and not even for a vw to start with.

Engine pics, is it the original engine?

It looks most likely to be a 1968-1970 Bug engine as set up. I see the lower tin for a single air filter heater pipe on the right side. Many Bug engines are missing those tins.

The heads, from the outside appearance, are 1966-1970 single port 1500 and 1600 cc. Older single port heads had the intake ports trait down where they exit the heads, later single ports had larger valves and ports and the slightly angled port.

The block is likely a replacement, thus no serial number. The distributor is an aftermarket Bosch 009. The oil cooling system is clearly not stock, the original system didn't include a filter and the cooler was inside the fan shroud. The voltage regulator was bolted to the fan shroud, so it is 12 volts (a 6V Bug engine has the regulator bolted to the generator.) The thermostat and its fan shroud flaps are missing.

It is a good base but it's not really possible to know what may have been done inside. I would guess stock because so much of the outside is still stock. I like these single port engines. I have a nicely rebuilt one in my buggy.

Agreed! Nice dependable engine if in good shape. A better one than the ‘64 would have been. Not the best for any major power upgrade but in stock or close to stock form it will give you good service. Needs a good cleaning and a few details taken care of.
