So I bought this Syncro Doka a couple of weeks ago over in Europe with the awesome help of Busman and it's shipping out of Belgium on the 26th and coming to the Port of Baltimore mid October. Is there any advice anyone can give me as far as paperwork, costs, and picking it up goes? I'm trying to do it without hiring a customs broker and I think I've got it pretty much figured out. I guess I have to file an ISF 10+2 form before it ships, but not sure where to file it to. Can I file online? And I know I have to have 3 forms with me, CBP 3299, CPB 7501, and hs799. 7501 seems a little challenging, but the other two seem pretty straightforward. And I know not to refer to it as a truck on any paperwork. Also, is there some kind of temporary tag I can get so I can drive it back to PA? I guess I'll give the CBP a call on Monday, just trying to get a head start.

What are the risks if you get one of these forms wrong? Is the doka quarantined? Does it take 4x the effort to clear it? It's seems there are times when mitigating risks by hiring a pro can be good.

Others here with experience will likely chime in.

Nice Doka! And the right color too! Busman shipped my Doka over to Tacoma for me last year.

I did hire a customs brokerage firm (not a registered importer) but as I had most the paperwork figured out and was there to meet it anyways so they didn’t cost me all that much. I needed to know all would be in order when I flew down to bring it through customs. Might be worth querying a local firm on cost estimations.

The ISF forms you’ll be sending to the shipping company when you talk with them - Busman delivers it and gives you the contact info. He’ll send you directly the paperwork for the vehicle - bill of sale, titles, whatever else, that you’ll then present to customs.

FYI As to the “truck” part - Tacoma customs was having no part of it being a multi use vehicle or anything other than a “truck” and I was either to pay 25% of what was shown on the bill of sale or I was not driving it away. I argued that it was not commercial in any sense but to them “...that’s a truck”. Others have had much better luck in the past, and could be Baltimore will be fine with the “MVP” or “Transporter” label and go with the 2.5%. Just be prepared. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

The customs brokerage had my temp tags for me with the Doka but when we brought our Canadian Westy across the border in Washington we just stopped at a DMV and picked up a three day temp pass. You’ll have to check MD and/or PA DMV for specifics in your case.

I wouldn’t plan on driving across country right off the batt without looking things over carefully and plan on time to correct any issues. The clutch on mine was so toasted it barely made it the 3 miles from the dock to customs - 2nd gear tops.

Temp tags won’t “ legally” cross state lines but you could chance the MD to PA border

Bring your chicken tax

I bring stuff into the US every week.

I use a broker.

I brought in a singlecab, doka, Karmann Gipsy, and LT Distance Wide. Only the singlecab was hit with the 25% because I brought it through Tacoma and the guy was an ass. The others all through Baltimore and were a breeze, truly nice people at customs - at the airport. I always go there for a lot less hassle. The paperwork is not difficult. I don't see any reason for 3299. You will need 3520-1, HS7, 7501. The shipping company should be able to do the ISF filing, you just need a copy when you go to customs. Where possible state Volkswagen Transporter, never truck. I can email you copies of the filled docs from my previous one if I can find them. You will need to hire a port escort (TWIC) to get into the port to drive it away, they charge $75/hr usually. I usually call A1, they are right next to the port.

Yes! I would love to look at your docs to make sure that I have them filled out correctly. Especially 7501 as there are a lot of boxes that I don't understand. Thank you for the offer! [email protected] My main concern right now is getting the ISF filed as it's due to ship Wednesday. The shipping company sent me an Xcel ISF form and Bill of Lading and said:

"* ISF filing (International Security File) -VERY IMPORTANT
BEFORE DEPARTURE of the vessel from Zeebrugge, an ISF file needs to be reported with US customs. This needs to be done by the consignee/his agent.
We will send you the ISF file shortly, with all necessary information filled out from our side. The file is to be completed by the consignee and filed with US customs, directly by the consignee or through a US agent of his choice. "

It looked fairly complete except for "Ctr stuffing location Address"? and "Consolidator (stuffer) Address"? Also, there were to spaces for "Country of Origin" that were left blank which I thought was weird for them to not fill out and "Ship to Address" which I'm assuming is my own address. I couldn't find a link on the CBP website to file the ISF either.

Also, do you know anything about being able to drive it home from the port, like a temporary registration I can get down there, or will I have to trailer it?

I got a local broker to handle my Syncro importation. They told me what to do, where to go and handled all the paperwork. Well worth the money and less hassle.

If you are shipping RORO then there is nothing to put in either the Ctr or Stuffer spaces.

Thanks Karl!! I was trying to find this exact info- I'm using Seabridge Lamprecht as the broker/ agent... they informed me today of the escort need... as well as the limited hours of picking up M-F only! Erghhhh.... was hoping to get there on a Saturday...guess not now and our new syncro will be sitting for a couple weeks. Sad

Just picked up my doka from Baltimore last week and have some advice/info for anybody doing the same. Customs went surprisingly smoothly at the airport and the woman I dealt with had me out of there in 20 minutes. Went to A-1 escort and was able to hire an escort to take me into the port right away. They charge $50 an hour for one person, however I was with my friend who was handling the tow truck so he had to go with me and the charge was $75 an hour for two people. The woman at A-1 called the shipping company, NYK line in Chicago just to make sure that I could go in to pick up the doka myself since I didn't have a broker, and she confirmed that I could. The woman at A-1 said it would take about an hour so I had no problem paying for both of us to go in........HOWEVER.....after leaving A-1 around 10:30 and getting through the checkpoint, we didn't get to the pick up area of the port until about 11:00, which wouldn't have been that big a deal because A-1's clock stops charging as soon as the vehicle is loaded onto the tow truck, but the people there said that they hadn't received a notice from the shipping company that the doka was released. Well, I repeatedly tried to call the NYK contact person in Chicago that I had been talking to and when I couldn't reach her, I tried to contact anyone in the country affiliated with NYK, but to no avail. Panic mode began when the people at the port told me that they all left for lunch between 11:30 and 1:00 so if they didn't get the release by 11:30, that meant that I would have to sit and wait for an hour and a half with the A-1 clock running at $75 an hour. As soon as 11:30 hit and I knew I would get charged $112.50 just for sitting there I called the owner of A-1, explained the situation, and pleaded for leniency. He was reluctant at first, but finally submitted and said he would see what he could do. Well I didn't get a hold of anyone from NYK until 12:30 when the woman I had been dealing with finally answered her phone. All previous calls had been going straight to her voicemail and she told me that her internet had been down. Apparently she is the only employee in the United States who works for A-1. (I assume) Anyway, she sent the release over right away, I went and stood at the window waiting for them to come back from lunch, the window slid open promptly at 1:00 and the guy said I was good to go. They brought the doka out immediately and I loaded up and prepared to follow the A-1 escort out. They knocked $25 off of the $225 escort bill which I guess is better than nothing, even though it was still a tough pill to swallow. Sat there for a minute waiting to go when the A-1 escort gets out of her car and told us that her car was dead. Having a tow truck, we had a jump box and I told her half jokingly that we would jump her car for $125. Haha. She was a nice girl. Anyway, for future reference, don't go to the docks between 11 and 1 and make sure the shipping company has sent the release before you go. Also, F the NYK line mickey mouse shipping company. Not sure what their deal is, but every # I tried to google was disconnected except for this woman in Chicago.

Hey sorry this thread fell through the cracks for me. I did this import. Glad you found seabridge. They bought out the company I imported with on us side and still had the import records I needed to sell my vehicles. Just a tip for anyone instead of paying 50 bucks an hour get a buddy with with a DOD cac and have them go get it with a power of attorney. They may even be able to escort a visitor. I had my military cac and was able to pick up on my own. Buy your buddy some crab and beers in Baltimore as a thank you.

Congrats on your import.

Yep. The shipping company should have sent you the release document, they owe you for that mess!

I'm surprised any port facility would let you in with just a Common Access Card. The TWIC cards have an RFID chip, which I don't think the current CAC cards have. Part of the deal with the TWIC is anyone can see where you (well, your card anyway) is located when you are in the port.

I have a TWIC for work, and even with that, it can be a challenge to gain access to some port facilities: quite often if the gate personnel don't see your name on a list of pre-approved ship's visitors, you can't get in.

Anyway, nice that you were able to get it done without too much hassle.

If you value your time over $25 an hour get a broker for this. If you think cars are hard try ITARS Department of. State regulated radioactive stuff.

Typically you will be delayed three weeks because if the port is busy, no one wants to interrupt material flow until things slacken. This is one of the business risks we mitigate when customers ask us to either use their importer, or drop ship in the states. We will guarantee shipmtime to their broker location only.

You have a 90% chance of getting it right, higher if you read here and comprehend well. Don’t think you will talk your way through a mistake, though.

If anyone is shipping in or out of Baltimore I live 30 minutes from the harbor and can provide a driveway or guest bedroom to help.

Maybe I should have made it more clear. I had to bring import documents to show why I was there. I had to walk on and was picked up at the otherside of the gate by the freight company. I shouldnt have made it seem any dod cac holder could just walk in and take a tour and shoot the shit. The other option was to pay 150 and they would literally drive it and drop it off outside the gate. So I could do it on my own why not?

Either way hope the rest of the process goes smoothly and post a lot of pics. The closest gas station is a shell about 5 minutes away from the port.

Just trolling through import threads. Bringing my syncro doka into Tacoma. Has ANYONE escaped the chicken tax at that port?? Sounds grim. I live in MT tho and further south isn't really an option, unless Portland OR is?

Nope, Long Beach or Tacoma. Every once in awhile you hear about someone slipping one through as a APV (all purpose vehicle) but these days they're pretty savvy about Dokas.
It's very unfair that the chicken tax still lives on, especially for used vehicles.
