Bought a rail with an assumed stock type 1 buggy trans and an 1835 vw with dual carbs. Dug into the motor after some issues. Motor runs, but does have some occasional popping. Cylinder 1 has some cylinder scoring due to what i believe to be from cylinder washing from major over fueling. It also has some ring blow-by. The left bank (cylinders 3 and 4) has a head stud that is stripped and I believe it is not allowing the cylinder head to be tightened properly and am getting some compression leak from cylinder 3 into cylinder 4. Engine runs and drives and still puts out good power, but these are some bigger issues that will need to be addressed at some point.
I'm contemplating doing the Eco Tec swap and selling the 1835. What is the value of an engine in this condition? Does it have more value selling directly to an engine builder? Or should a part the engine out?
Second part of the question is the trans. The stock type 1 buggy trans won't be able to handle the eco tec (or any other higher output engine). Can these trans be built to handle 200+ HP reliably? If so, is it going to cost more than a bus trans to do so? I hear bus trans are better for higher HP engines. |
