Looking for 356 engine education.

Thursday I was offered a 356 engine "Cheap".
It is in pieces but supposed to be complete.
The crank is still in the cases and said to be a roller type.
Were roller cranks standard for 356 engines?

It's a fairly long drive for me but I could go back for it if it really is a good deal.
Not sure what I would do with it, could put it in my Auto-X F-Vee, unless it is too valuable for that?

Assuming the engine is "original," avoid roller bearing cranks. What number is stamped on the 3rd piece?

If it is an original roller crank engine then you may have something valuable if it's an early one. The guys restoring pre-A's will be more than happy to take it off your hands at a nice profit for you assuming you buy it right. If it's a later version, say into 1957 or so, then as Jon said not so much.

Get the engine number and put it in here to see when it was built:

1955 and earlier...get it!

1956-57 buy it if you want, but if you keep it use a plain bearing crank.
