Hello there,
I know that crank start was available on buses up to around 1959 and beetles through 52/55ish? I want to add the crank start setup to my 1958 beetle and have found the rear tin with hinged hole flap, the crank start handle, and a repro bracket for the rear bumper.
heres the thing. I cant find much info about the crank start option on the net or on the samba itself. i have a few questions.
im looking for a pic of the hole in the rear apron. what are the correct dimensions for its location as well as correct diameter of the hole in the apron?
what covers this hole and keeps hot air from comoing up through it into the engine compartment- i mean vw did the hinged flap on the engine tin, but missed this? is there some unobtanium cover for the hole in the apron
how is the bumper bracket mounted? any pics of hardware?
how long was the original handle? there is a gentlemen on the samba that makes reproduction handles. I dont have my motor in currently and need to know the correct distance from the face of the crank pulley washer to the furthest point of the center of the bumper? i have an original EMPI push bar that bolts through the overrider uprights and i need to make the crank handle long enough so its 90 degree bend clears the push bar. how long was the original handle??
detailed pics of all this stuff posted here or links would be awesome!!! thanks- Bret _________________ Official 58-60 "Early Big Window" Convertible Thread & Registry

Here's a picture of a September 1949, maybe you can derive the location from this. Mine measures about 1 5/8" or about 42mm
Heres the crankstart bracket that mounts on the bumper with two 6mm bolts.
There is no cover on the apron hole.

The 52 and later rear bumper may put the bracket higher than that of a Split's grooved bumper. Check the height. _________________

From PR:
October 1949 the crankstart handle was no longer supplied on all cars (deluxe and standard) and was instead supplied only on cars ordered with the feature.
29 Aug. 58 at chassis 384 875
Starting handle was no longer supplied in tool kit, starter dog (crank pulley bolt) discontinued after present stocks are exhausted. |

Virtanen in finland is making new crank guides:

Anyone know the dimensions of a beetle crank start handle? |
Bump, the overall length would be a very helpful bit of information that would help me right now. Can anyone measure their beetle handle please? _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

If you are looking for a crank handle (not mine): https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1090316
He can also make the early version:
