Surfboard is facing in the wrong direction....
As for board placement, place your board waxed side (deck) down with your fins facing up. The tail (fin end) should be pointing forward toward the front of the car. Why? Take a look at your board's contours (learn about the parts of the surfboard). With the flat tail area flowing smoothly along the rocker ...toward the nose, the wind will not get caught under the board but will rather exert some pressure down of the board and make it much safer if for some reason you didn’t secure it properly. Of course, the board will not stay on the roof unsecured, but less force will be pushing against the board and on the strap strength. Further, the fins will act as an added block to hinder the board’s slipping under the front strap.
Your surfboard flying off your racks is bad for your board and more importantly dangerous to others, so be sure to place your board on the racks properly, double check your straps several times before you take off, and pay special attention to their security as you traverse high bridges or travel under stormy conditions.

Aloha all, this is my 1967 Volkswagen Squareback. I live near Pescadeo, California and love to surf! My custom roof rack was built in New Mexico by the second PO and often perfectly locks in my short boards between the wood panels and the front and rear upper rack bars! I just slide in the nose first and then slide the tail in from the side to lock it in then I just use bungees to keep it from moving around. For my fiberglass longboards I use Da Kind foam roller pads and a long synch strap in a figure 8
under my Sagebrush board bag is my 6’2” Akila Aipa/GOAT Slater Flat Earth twin fin. LOVE THIS BOARD! My super fast high performance short board that is my go to daily surfboard
This is my 6’3” Christian Beamish Mini Simmons with wood keel twin fins and red resin tinting.
This is my other Christian Beamish/Surfboards California 6’2” Old School MR style twin fin with wood glass on fins and amber resin tinting.
Along with my CB amber twin fin hidden away is my Steve Ford 5’11” Fish and one of my all time favorite surfboards!
The red 9’0” Crime soft top with a purple Wingnut cutaway fin. I brought on my Type 3 Rally in 2021. No wax needed and feeling good barefoot Rincon, Malibu, Topanga and Lover’s Point. This is a photo from Big Sur!
This is my 9’11” Dead Kooks GUERRERO This board is amazingly fast.
On the Type 3 Rally 2021 rocking my CB Old School Twin _________________ 67' Squareback
