Mild & clear late January pleasure drive to Guilford, CT... Sunday afternoon, January 23, 2021. A beautiful day with clear and salt-free roads (thanks to some preceding non-freezing days with some rain, that washed the salt off, and staved off the salt trucks from adding more, at least for a bit) to drive my '70 Bug up to my brother-in-law's place, out in the woods of Guilford, CT.

Heading north on Moose Hill Road, Guilford, CT--"out in the country."

Parked at my brother-in-law's place in the woods. Sorry for unfortunate shadows, but that's sometimes what you get with low-angle winter sunlight, particularly in the woods.

New Year's Day 2021 Meet-Up for CVAers & friends, Madison, CT... Clear, dry roads, and not-uncomfortable temperatures allowed an & informal little get-together, Friday, January 1, 2021, at a Dunkin Donuts in Madison, CT, not far from Hammonasset State Park. Great opportunity to exercise the oldies. Thanks Bill A. and Jeff M. from CVA (Connecticut Volkswagen Association) for setting it up and getting the word out via Facebook. I was glad to make it there with my '70 Bug. Here are a couple of panorama pictures I attempted with my I-Phone.

The red looks cool with that particular body color. I do like those.

The slotted mags, though, they hit a sweet spot for me because I remember them on the muscle cars. Very cool. They are cleaning up nicely. Lots of work polishing that alloy though!

I miss the cruizing. Thanks for sharing the meet-up pics.

Bug on.

Thanks Buggeee! I like the red accent with that body color also. I also have a set of red stock wheels that I use a *brown* set of Deano's smoothie rings with, and wide whitewalls--that look really pops also on this car (there may be a couple pictures on a previous page in this thread).

With regard to the 5-slots, I had them silver powder coated, and they came out really nice. Still have to get tires mounted on them. Here's how they looked the day I picked them up from the local powdercoating place--sorry not a great picture to show them off--I need to get a better shot or two next chance I get:

Took off the 15" red steelies this past Sunday, and bolted up the newly-completed set of 14" 5-slot mags with 205/70R14 ebay raised white letter tires. Couple of outdoor photos from a very brief test drive later that day will be following, next chance I get...

Thanks!

Love your '71 Super, by the way! My very first car was a '71 Super Convertible, my dad helped me finance the purchase in '76. It was Clementine (a slightly mellow orange).

My former red CIP-1 China smoothies now with a new owner!

Photo by the new owner of my former 15x5.5" red smoothie wheels, with 195/60R15 BF Goodrich RWL's, following the sale this past Monday, 3/15/2021, and mounted onto their beautiful '73 Bug. I had never tried fitting hubcaps, but they do look sharp!

I had been running a "Low Back Bug Front Seats Wanted" ad on TheSamba for a bit, looking for some '66-'67 style to fix up and use in my '70 Bug. Air George responded to my ad and sent some pictures of some very decent used '66 seats that he had. A deal on price was struck, and then I arranged to drive down to pay him and pick up the seats--which was accomplished Saturday, February 13th, 2021. Air George is a super-nice, and super-helpful guy, and I very much appreciated working with him on this seat deal! He graciously posed for a photo with the seats loaded up in the back of my dirty Subie for the ride back up to Connecticut. It was an all-around fun & satisfying adventure to The Garden State, and a real pleasure meeting & doing some business with Air George!

Fast forwarding now to mid-March, 2021: I tried to document with cell phone photos the way the old upholstery came off in the process of re-covering the nice pair of '66 low-back front seats that I bought from Samba seller Air George last month. Most of the shots are super-boring, nitty-gritty detail close-ups, but here's one overall shot of the second of the two seats, sitting on our workbench, just prior to digging in to disassemble the backrest from the base, and then removing the old original '66 upholstery.

I am definitely "amateur hacker" level when it comes to reupholstering seats, but I managed to get both of 'em done with TMI seat covers and got them installed into the '70 Bug this past Monday. No installed pictures yet, but here are the two seats right after I finished the second one (only a couple of stab wounds from those metal spikes that hold the upholstery on, ha ha!).

Just one more quick note of THANKS to Samba seller Air George--the seats are great!

A nice Springtime pleasure drive along the CT Shoreline... Had the '70 Bug out on a little pleasure drive over to Guilford, CT and back, along the CT Shoreline scenic Route 146 yesterday, Monday, April 5th, 2021. Nice day to get out and about for a little bit of air cooled exercise.

Thanks AutoMechanic! I originally got that plate to put on my former '03 Buick LeSabre--a car that I inherited from my father. He had gotten "too old to drive," and the car ended up sitting for several years before we got it. I guess the plate was kind of a sideways tribute to him.

Anyway, didn't want to lose the use of it (if you don't maintain a vanity plate registration, eventually it "dies," and someone else can then possibly do a vanity plate request, and get it reissued). At least that's how it works in CT.

Very cool. Yes here in VA once you kill a plate by forgetting to renew or not renewing any plate whether vanity or not it does. Besides the Year of Manufacturer plates which I have on my beetle they can be reactivated by anyone you sell them too as long as they have that model year of car up until 1973 when they were discontinued. I collect license plates so I typically switch the ones I my regular cars periodically so I can have more to display on my wall. Smile

I enjoy displaying mine on the walls of the garage also! I've had several vanitys over the years also. One in particular that I had on my former '78 Volare (long since gone) was "SLANT-6" and I eventually saw it years later on a '60s Valiant (I had failed to maintain it, and eventually someone must've applied for it and got it).
