These are loud. Too loud. I'll have to cram some turbo mufflers under there someday but I'm on a deadline. These will have to do for now.
I got it fired up, but I've been bogged down in dual Solex tuning troubles which caused me to lose some motivation. I made a few discoveries lately, so we'll see what happens.
I picked up my floors (Thanks Ted!) and dry fit them.
They are currently about 3/4 welded in.
On to the cargo doors.
Both doors are now fixed...enough - which brings me to the end of the major rust repair. Currently I'm stripping the last of the brown and yellow paint.
Next is sound deadening, interior panels, stripping the cargo doors, paint buffing, and starting to bolt stuff together. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

I located the source of all my engine troubles, so I'm back on track!!
This crappy peen job on this carb plug was sucking in air, causing all sorts of problems. Fixed!
Also cut out some interior panels today using this handy post as reference:

So.
I threw this thing together and promptly hopped on I-70 and drove like 1200(?) miles. Not sure.
Not a good idea, but if you're on the instagrams, check out @coloradocarabus2019.
Anyway, here's what happened (in an extremely abridged form) since the last pic:
3D printed a block-off, installed USB phone charger:
Started buffing out the OG paint:
The only body mod I had to do to cram the type 4 in there was to allow a bit of extra room for airflow to the fan.
My buddy Garner helped my do some sheet metal work to the decklid.
(I don't really fell guilty about this since it had been hit and filled with bondo.)
And unfortunately I don't have a finished pic of the decklid at the moment...
Putting the front doors together, I fixed the broken latches (both sides):
I got the major mechanicals working and took it out of the neighborhood for its first fuel stop.

After cruising approximately 3 miles, I met up with 5 other busses and headed west. I'm in mid MO.
Somewhere in western MO or KS:
Fuel stop somewhere in KS:
After this we passed out in mid KS.
Somewhere in western KS:
Our first CO stop was in Pueblo. A local coffee shop owner accosted us and gave us free coffee.
Eastern CO.
First CO camping spot.
More crusing west:
Camping at Jefferson Lake:
Manitou Springs:
On the way to Pike's Peak:
At the 7 mile marker up Pike's Peak:
Bristol Brewing in CO Springs:
And so on. Again, visit @colodoradocarabus2019 for more pics.
After some more adventures, we headed back across KS. Then...tragedy struck.
More later. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

The last pic ^^, I knew we were screwed because the engine just locked up tight. End of trip.
We found a local VW angel on the AIRS list who showed up with a bus tow bar in like 20 minutes. Amazing.
He let me store the bus at his place, I threw our important stuff in friends' busses, and rode back to MO in the back seat of my buddy's deluxe.
I was bummed.
A week or so later, my brother's friend happened to be coming from CO to MO with available trailer space, and he volunteered to pick it up along the way:
I felt a little bit better with the bus back home.
Of course I had to tear into it.
Cool time lapse of removal:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B1AKtXeHW33/
During this ^^, I removed the drain plug and about 1/2qt. of oil dribbled out.
Well fuck.
Air injection plug had popped out of the exhaust port:
Lots of damage.
Heads looked ok, some signs of running a bit lean.
#2 rod was seized on to the crank.
More scoring, typical on all 4 cylinders
I tossed the pistons and cylinders and took the engine to STL for a bottom-end rebuild. Top end I can do - bottom end not so much.
While I waited to get the engine work done, I busied myself with some other projects.
Started to strip the paint off the roof:
Air vent seals:
Took the bug to a campout:
Worked on the nerd gauge:

Are you going to build a Type 1 now instead of the Type 4 ? Also , what will the gauge you built display ? _________________ My '65-Subaru EJ20 Turbo conversion |

Nope, type 4 is going back in.
The guage will display fuel level (using the stock sender), tach, outside temp.
So it turns out I made a complete rookie mistake - didn't get one valve cover seated correctly, and lost most of the oil. This combined with my idiot light that quit working halfway into the trip means I didn't have any idea what was going on back there until it died.
Oh well.
Let's fast forward.
I got the bottom end rebuilt, new P&C set, re-assembled and I re-jetted the solexes:
I also have been working on tidying up the seal around the apron.
It's back to driver status now, more to come. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

I'm new to the site and just read your thread. Very nice job. Where did you get those cool LED headlights? I'm redoing my 66 panel van and would love to have something like that. |

I love them! They're super bright and I just think they look cool - plus much less stress on the wiring.
I just searched for "7" round LED headlight" on amazon - there's plenty of flavors. You do have to do some custom wiring. I eliminated the parking light bulbs and wired them to the "halos". There's also an input to the halos for a turn signal, that I jumped from the actual turn signal. I also got an adjustable speed 3-prong flasher from amazon and did LEDs in the rear as well.
Make sure to aim them correctly (and down a bit) so you don't blind oncoming traffic.

Been chasing down some oil leaks - I think I fixed one that appeared to be the dipstick boot between the fan housing and the block.
Strange design.
Driving it.
Also got one function of my gauge working:

I've been battling some very frustrating engine tuning issues that I just recently figured out, and now, finally, after all these miles, it's a blast to drive.
I'm ready to hit the road again!
Let's get campin'. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Nice! Just reading through this build again, I remember bookmarking this as your A-Pillar / inner headlight support / Dogleg situation is very similar to mine at the minute, thanks for chiming in on my dogleg post! |

Update! Not much progress here except driving the piss out of it the last few years. I'm loving the 2.0L with the Weber IDFs + CB Performance black box. She seems to run strong without any complaints at all, even loaded down with gear.
I did fix the wheel wells:
Driving & camping.
I ordered some touch-up paint to finally get those doglegs and rockers (somewhat) matched up.
I also want to come up with a single outlet / muffler exhaust system, but I don't quite know how to do the crossover just yet. The dual 2-into-1s seem to work fine for now, even if they are a bit obnoxious.
Cheers. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.
