Dave I did a similar project with a temp gauge and with a similar temp probe. Just not a fancy as yours.. It takes 2 little watch batteries that have lasted over 2.5 years.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073RP1476/ref=cm_sw_r_s...&psc=1

I installed the little unit in the top steering column cover that I believe was the switch location for a heated seat. With a little work with the Dremel tool it slid right in there. Was able to slide the probe further over than the head light bucket and zip tied it to the blinker wire.

As far as accuracy in this location, it has been really good and is only effected by migrating heat from the radiator when at a stop light longer then a minute or two.

This is the only picture I could find of it. (Currently too lazy to walk out to the shop) -12 in Jackson Hole early last December.

Dave,
You got me thinking "why didn't I think of that....." and had to go out to the camper just to see where REALLY is the sensor tip located. Why didn't I complain about the headlight contributing too much heat......

OMG! down behind the front bumper, driver's side.

Now I can sleep tonight Very Happy

Since we are on the topic of temp gauge things, Slaughterhouse Customs has a ash tray mount unit that looks good too.

It turns out that my dodge temperature/compass mirror isn't a mirror at all.

It is an overhead console.
No room for it with the front A/C vents.
(This console has been successfully installed in Vanagons, if you want it, PM me.)

I'll use the thermometer I had ordered and arrived today, my Garmin GPS has a built in compass.

All is good!

Now to plug it in and see how bright the display is at night!

Well darkness has fallen upon the NorthEastern USA.......

Went out to the Van and clicked on the parking lights.

This thermometer which is great in the daylight, demands attention at night!

Nice little unit though, if only it dimmed ......... I'll try a couple of locations using double stick tape and see where I like it best.

Hmmm, we have the same conversations. This is also why I like the unit I posted that records highs and lows for three days "It got down to 20 F last night! Aren't we hearty people (and thank goodness for the Propex and blankets)."

A Vanagon vendor offers an attractive indoor/outdoor thermometer that fits and is extending an April Fools day discount to us (the AAA battery in mine seems to last forever)...

Good tip!
Just ordered the uniWerks unit.

Now back to probe location.

I’m favoring the bumper as Duncan noted

Behind the bumper should be good, just be sure to have a decent air gap. The bumper will get hot in the sun.

Wireless sensor and place it behind the front turn signal lens.

No place is perfect but that's the best I've found.

Uniwerks thermometer arrived.

Nice little unit but I'm underwhelmed.

Hard to see and read, no light....... Eh! ......

Will Continue seeking a suitable unit.

I’ve been looking at that one and a similar one but they weren’t blue. Blue seas site says a blue one is coming.

Blue only because I have a blue voltage readout / USB charger on the dash. So I set my new radio to match the voltage display color.
That darn OCD thing......

I read there is a button for selection from C° to F°.
I would like to power it from the ign circuit which means there is no draw when the key is off. It is only a 10mA draw. I wonder if it defaults to C° After a power loss as many units seem to do.
It is a top contender right now.

Well DUH!
It is wired differently for F°!

I've been looking at a LOT of thermometers, I confused another with this one.

The Blue Sea unit requires a hole 1-1/8" diameter. Where would you install it?

My PO removed the cigar lighter and installed a round two plug USB port in its place.

I would put this next to the lighter socket. Same diameter I think.

EDIT: A female lighter socket requires a 1” hole. With the bezel they are about 1 1/8” diameter.
