I thought i'd update this post a little, not much has changed recently as I have been working on my 1969 Westfalia.
I had some replica Theo Decker decals designed as they are no longer available, they would have been original installed on the fan shroud but I had two sizes made up so they could be used elsewhere. I also picked up an NOS Bosch blue coil.
With lockdown happening in the U.K I haven't really been able to drive it much but when I have, it's been great fun. During the summer it was a great honour to have the car photographed from Volksworld Magazine, the issue came out in April so it might be appearing stateside soon
I have a few things still left to do which i'm hoping to finish off soon, hopefully in time for some VW events! _________________ Steve

You need to reindex the distributor drive so the BOSCH nameplate is facing the rear.
It's all about the details. _________________ Glenn

I know, I see that everytime. I'm not confident to do it on my own yet and as we have been in lockdown (and the car stored away for winter) I haven't been able to do it. It's high on my list of things to do though! _________________ Steve

Don't lose any sleep over it... summer is coming and you'll get to it.
I like the logos on the intake manifolds.
Might want to look for a cloth covered fuel hose. Flennor hose that is E85 safe and looks correct and made in Germany.
I use it on my old school 2180.

That’s cool! Cheers! I have been looking into cloth fuel line, I’d bought new fittings and was planning on using Cohline cloth covered hose until I read more detail about it, it doesn’t cope well with the ethanol in our fuel! _________________ Steve

I have been searching for and collecting original KPZ 356 wheels for the car, I picked up two more yesterday to make a set of four. One is dated 1/57, two are 7/61 and the last one is 8/61. Hopefully I’ll find another 8/61 to have matching pairs.

Good luck getting them balanced. A lot of Porsche guys send them out and have the outer rim removed and new ones welded on and then balanced. They are worse than split bus wheels or beetle wide fives. They just get beat to hell over the years. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Balancing beads (liquid wheel balancing fluid), commonly used for motorcycle wheels, will work if you're having a hard time with static weights. |

Hi first of all congrats on your car very nice detailed and clean
I just want to know if those home made spacers are one solid piece like the aftermarket ones or five independent cylinders
I am toying with the idea of a similar stand of yours using a set of mocked up '66 wheels drilling holes beside to the lugs, add caps clips and maybe some file work on the slots to mimic the 356's |

Thanks 🙂 The spacers are separate cylinder spacers, 20mm deep and with a hole drilled through the middle instead of being threaded as the original carrera spacers would have been. _________________ Steve

Thanks Bill 😊
Not much of an update but I recently restored the KPZ 356 wheels and I’m very happy with the result. I had the rims media blasted and then I painted them myself, I took the rims to a classic tyre specialist who installed new inner tubes with my existing Vredestein tyres and balanced them up with no problems.

Late to the party on this thread, but I love your old speed Beetle! I am looking to get back in to a vintage Beetle after a 30+ year break. Ha ha!
The old speed look is what I want to create as well. Would love to see more pics of your build!
Thanks!

Unless I'm mistaken can't he just rotate the distributor without reindexing the drive. Then just move the wires round. Since there is no vaccum can to get in the way and I don't think the 010 has a different timing for number 3 either.
Can't he just do that? |

Lovely beetle by the way. Looks great.
I have a Ruby Red 65 that is getting a similar treatment. I'll post some photos when I get a chance.
If you have any spare Theo Decker stickers I'd love one! Mine has Theo Decker tailpipes which sound great.
Maybe see you at a show, I'm just up the road in Leeds. Cheers. |
