Thanks for the photos and the mirror mod suggestion.

This is what I thought the designers had in mind with the raised housing so I was confused when you said a reflector prohibited the amber light from shining to the rear.

Is the new housing with the reflector stamped DOT?

Well dam...twice today I am admitting I'm wrong Embarassed Embarassed

I looked closer at it - an older original oem lens I have is VW & DOT stamped are actually thicker on the rear side and I can get my pinky all the way into the lens and touch the rear side. So obviously the design was meant to show some of that light to the rear.

I took some pic's of them in the sunlight and to me considering it's age and fading it is not eye-catching..
I'll post the pic's later as I'm working on some other things right now.
The new lenses which I see are the same on all 3 USA vendor websites all look the same. They are made in Taiwan and definitely not DOT stamped.

Not being DOT stamped is not bothering me as they do work the way they are supposed to.

When I got the Syncro from Germany in 2016 it had smoked lenses and they look to be made by the same mfg. and are not DOT stamped.

I curious if VW is still having the OEM lenses made?

Steve, my smoked front turn signals are made by Hella, and have an "E" on them. No DOT. They do not have the internal reflector as my original amber ones did. If I remember, you could not see them glow on the back because of the reflector.

I looked at mine earlier and forgot i saw the mfg. name Depo" on them with the E4 code on it. Why I said they looked like they came from the same imitator vendors I don't know...really screwing up today! Laughing

Hey Steve, a member 3D prints nice frosted plastic replacements for the mirror bottom so you can mount an LED inside as a repeater.

I have a pair but haven't yet installed them...

I know. I have a set to try!

I took apart a camera last night and reduced the size small enough to fit in the base below the mirror swivel and above the plastic cap. So things are looking up for this mod. Very Happy

So there is it is recessed into the bumper.

And from where you would sit in a car alongside.

At night you can see the VW OEM signal, but obviously the mod is brighter.

So if you look at the OEM signal you have the turn signal visible and makes it questionable whether this is really needed.

As far as my own vehicle is concerned I'll do it again if I get another Vanagon.

Looks pretty good actually. Do they make them with smoked lens? That would be real nice

Thanks. Smoked lens? That would blend in nicely. I have no clue about whether they do.
Somebody probably does somewhere.

It's even a better mod cause you have a panel van. Changing into the right lane must be a little nicer now Very Happy

That's pretty awesome. Recessed looks really nice and a big improvement over stock.

I think the only way to further improve the idea is to move it to the mirror.

Lol. I wasn't even aware of the "Mirror Mod" thread when I did this! Or I don't remember it.

I try to stay aware of traffic, but there's always something you miss.
It is a lot better feeling merging now. 😁

I agree with 3D printing new power mirror caps with LEDs in them, or with a mount for a commercially made amber LED light.

They will be up high where other people can see them
