Most of the engines leak enough oil they can't rust!
I usually paint them during engine build. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

wow 73 views and 1 reply! drscope you nailed it I was considering painting them with high heat silver/aluminum finish so I might just do that.
Thanks for your help! |
Most silver paints don't hold up well to oil and grease. And a lot of them will simply come off on your hands as you handle the parts.
The push rod tubes aren't really a "show" area, so being pretty usually isn't that important.
I would go with black only because I know most black paints will withstand the oil and that environment better then most silver paints will. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I have painted them black with a heat-resistant paint.
Didn't want them to rust after 1 year you know |

Keep in mind that you don't need a super high temp paint - They wont be much hotter than your oil. I did a set on one of the cars with silver rustoluem and then a coat of krylon clear to keep the paint from brushing off about 6 months ago and they still look real good. Also there are stainless tubes out there - I have installed 2 sets and like the "windage" style better. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

NAPA sells a 500 degree F heat CLEAR. Wash the tubes real good to remove any oils and clear coat them. _________________ 2007 Dodge Cummins Diesel 4x4 6spd stick

Thanks for all the replies guys.
This car will be a driver, not a daily driver but certain things will go through normal wear and tear and thats fine.
That said, I have just put a lot of work into the engine and I wanted to keep it looking good so I appreciate the guidance.
I bought high heat aluminum finish and I plan to do that this weekend, though I must say the clear is a fantastic idea.
I can post pics here when its done for closure, but I'm pretty sure you all have seen a push rod before _________________ Shadetree Westy

The clear dulls them down quite a bit - but once again, your goal is to prevent rust. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

I installed stainless tubes on the last 1500 I rebuilt unfortunatley 36hps dont have such a thing (yet) its only a matter of time though, in an infinate universe everything will eventually be found to be growing from a plant on another planet somewhere...
but seriously I went thru boxes of used lightly rusted tubes and over half of them were found to have holes in them by the time I got done wire brush derusting them, the stainless ones I bought were very reasonably priced and the only visable difference between them and stock ones is that after 4 years they are still rust free! _________________ There is an idea of a Billmetric; some kind of abstraction.
