What do you guys use to keep your push rod tubes looking nice and fresh?

Last Triumph mentioned a product by Valvoline called Tectyl multi-purpose 502.
Is that available on this side of the pond or are there any alternatives to that product?

I'm guessing from the factory they just had a light skim coat of oil and that was it.

Most of the engines leak enough oil they can't rust!

I usually paint them during engine build.

wow 73 views and 1 reply! drscope you nailed it I was considering painting them with high heat silver/aluminum finish so I might just do that.

Thanks for your help!

Most silver paints don't hold up well to oil and grease. And a lot of them will simply come off on your hands as you handle the parts.

The push rod tubes aren't really a "show" area, so being pretty usually isn't that important.

I would go with black only because I know most black paints will withstand the oil and that environment better then most silver paints will.

I have painted them black with a heat-resistant paint.
Didn't want them to rust after 1 year you know Laughing

Keep in mind that you don't need a super high temp paint - They wont be much hotter than your oil. I did a set on one of the cars with silver rustoluem and then a coat of krylon clear to keep the paint from brushing off about 6 months ago and they still look real good. Also there are stainless tubes out there - I have installed 2 sets and like the "windage" style better.

NAPA sells a 500 degree F heat CLEAR. Wash the tubes real good to remove any oils and clear coat them.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
This car will be a driver, not a daily driver but certain things will go through normal wear and tear and thats fine.
That said, I have just put a lot of work into the engine and I wanted to keep it looking good so I appreciate the guidance.

I bought high heat aluminum finish and I plan to do that this weekend, though I must say the clear is a fantastic idea.

I can post pics here when its done for closure, but I'm pretty sure you all have seen a push rod before Laughing

The clear dulls them down quite a bit - but once again, your goal is to prevent rust.

Ok so I primed and finished the pushrod tubes today. The ends of the pushrod tubes were taped off to keep paint from the inside. I drilled 8 deck screws into a scrap piece of lumber.

Looks good but report back in regard to drscope's comment. He knows engines and has a lot of experience. I'm going to guess that time will prove him correct about the color choice.

We shall see. They don't get as hot as an intake manifold for example so I think I will be just fine.
No disrespect to drscope or anyone else who said to steer away from silver. What can I say I am stubborn. Laughing

I installed stainless tubes on the last 1500 I rebuilt Cool unfortunatley 36hps dont have such a thing (yet) its only a matter of time though, in an infinate universe everything will eventually be found to be growing from a plant on another planet somewhere...
but seriously I went thru boxes of used lightly rusted tubes and over half of them were found to have holes in them by the time I got done wire brush derusting them, the stainless ones I bought were very reasonably priced and the only visable difference between them and stock ones is that after 4 years they are still rust free!

No need anything inside. That's what the oil takes care of.
