I probably should have... Just did the same thing dembus did. Ordered the 'VW" symbol coupler off of Cip1 and received the OEM style. Odered this:

And got this:

Jokes on them, they sent me the $3 more expensive one, ha. They're probably the same thing, right? Plus, i'd say it's better than what I had in my bus:

Can't believe I was driving around with that garbage. I also can't believe all that connects my steering column to the steering box is a hockey puck. Amazing.

CIP1 = COST INCLUDES PROBLEMS

I have never had any success with ordering from CIP1. They are on my do not call list.

Been trying to locate a good one of these for a while and nobody has them. Cip1 carries "OEM German" ones now which I just received but it's flimsier than the "premium quality" POS. WW is closed for pandemic, Bug Haus is out of stock. Open for suggestions!

does it look like this and have the same marks, If it does the flex is because it is new rubber. If it doesn't look like this then it is not made by the same people that make the factory ones. Old stock ones will be stiff because the rubber is old. That is also why tires crack as they get older.

Yes, that's the one. I'm just a little peeved that what they sell is not what they have pictured. I will install it and see how it goes, as I can't seem to find a decent one from a trusted source. Thanks!

WW is open! From their website: We are back open.

In accordance to the Governors guidelines, we will be resuming business beginning Monday, May 11, 2020.

We will resume shipping web orders with slightly longer lead times due to safety concerns and volume. For customers wishing to Will Call parts, we will offer a Pick Up service which can be ordered via phone or the website.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to closely monitor the situation and evaluate additional measures to support our customers, community and employees.

shakes head....
1) This is totally wrong and incorrect information. but dont take my word.

2) I have many NOS rubber parts, the rubber is still soft and supple after 50 plus years. If its stored correctly in cool, dry, no light conditions there is no damage to the rubber. Modern grades of rubber are made to a price point not a quality level, just look at new CV boot rubbers, they split after a few months....
The rubber business is to make MONEY not quality. Welcome to the globalized world!
and i am not a material rubber engineer, just using common sense!

3) Now for the FLEX part;...

The REPRO rubber couplers flex and bend in half because they are made of ONLY rubber and nothing else, they are not correctly manufactured without any internal mesh weave material as per original specification.

Original couplers are made in a 2 part mould that is vulcanized together with a mesh type material in the middle for reinforcement. I have spoken to one of the original manufactures in Germany. There is a lot of work involved in making these, compared to the REPRO rubbers that are just stamped out in a ASIA factory that makes foam flip flop sandals.

any way, spend your hard earned money where and on what you want,
I am trying to educate the misinformed on this part.

I have tested almost all the versions available on the current market and my conclusions is that they are all junk!.

Nobody has stepped up to the plate to make these CORRECTLY because to make them properly is very expensive. unless you are doing large production runs in the 1000s.
I found this out by inquiring with a original manufacturer in Germany.

vw nutter I would trust your judgement better if you didn't have money in the pot. I have nothing in the pot.

Anyone got any leads on any quality steering couplers currently available.

Jbugs and WW are out of stock.

CIP1 has three:
https://www2.cip1.com/searchresults.asp?Search=211415417

I want to get one that has the fiber reinforcements. It's not clear if any of those do. Two of the "different" couplers use the same image.

Thanks!
Mark

edit: I ordered the suzuki one. I'll report back how it goes. Yeah, I know, I won't be a 100 point restoration but I think that ship already sailed with the engine swap Wink

It'd still be good to keep this thread up to date with who has currently available quality parts.

Well, I doubt this will be of help to anyone outside of So Calif...

But I was at the Pomona Swap Meet a couple years ago with Robbie.
He helped me find a good new coupler for $5.

Still haven't used it yet, but I have a stash of many new OEM parts when I need them.

I got an SGF brand last spring or summer (IIRC) from a source that I think I saw mentioned in this very thread.

Ya i tried that route. It appears to be of good construction with multi layers and reinforced cloth webbing however they seem to be sized for what I'm guessing is bug not a bus (at least a 72 bus).

I cant remember which CIP1 i ended up buying. The one i bought about 3 years ago ripped apart while on a road trip last year. The metal mesh which had me spending a whole day trying to figure out WTF was going on with my horn i guess helped me get home before I realized what had happened.

The last CIP1 purchase cuz I needed something NOW and I live close to their distribution center not only bends horizontally like the sole on a shoe but I can squeeze in laterally and deform the coupler's shape. Its not long for this world

One of my to do list items before the bus gets pulled out of winter hibernation is to try and engineer some sort of safety "catch" like the pic of the corvair ??? coupler's hardware either in this thread or another similar thread. I was also going to order another coupler from WW to install at the same time - bummer to hear they are currently sold out

I have bought quite a bit of stuff from CIP. It the same stuff everybody else sells and is hit and miss unless you really know what you’re buying.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

I removed the old coupler that must have gone in with the new steering box a couple of years ago. It won't surprise anyone that it was "Premium Quality" and looked like the other junk pictures posted here.. a piece of string coming out of it where it failed.

I bought 3 couplers:

1. The Suzuki Samari coupler is too small. The distances between the holes don't match. It's heading back to Suzuki to reclaim my $30.

I bought two bus couplers from ebay which are similar. They don't have any markings on them. I have pretty good grip strength and could not deflect #2 hardly at all. #3 I can fold a little more, but it's still very stiff.

2. https://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-Volkswagen-Steering-Co...3955153758 sold by seller daften_classic. This one $8.87 + $4.00 shipping. This is what I used and seemed to be the stiffest. It came in a bag labeld Pacific Parts International. This is what I'd recommend.

3. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Steering-Shaft-Flex-Coupl...4568980390 This one will be my spare as it does not seem as stiff as #2. About $20 with shipping from seller aladinautoparts. The picture is misleading as it looks like you can see the laminated layers. In reality what I got was a molded piece that looks identical to other molded pieces.

They're also a "local" business, owned by real VW people that put on a casual meetup every week in the SF Valley. Good people to support these days!

I finally got around replacing my old steering coupler as turning left was becoming a bit squirrelly. A few years back, I purchased two: 1) SGF from Just Kampers and 2) "premium quality" from ???.

SGF was my obvious choice after reading some of the issues with "premium quality". SGF is performing well and steering slop has been dramatically reduced. It was done from underneath as others have indicated and fairly straight forward.
