Ok, guys (and gals), here’s the puzzle: ’75 VW SB (original FI engine gone); ’71 – ’73 44 bph 1300cc (?) carb engine replacement. Current carb is a Euromax 34 PICT 3, DVDA Dist (both retard and advance work) 113905205AN. I’ve acquired a Solex 34 PICT 3 (325-2) carb. The chart listing the original dist/carb factory combo lists the above as compatible. I need guidance in that on the Solex there’s a rivet on the bottom of the throttle plate (plugging the air hole?). I’ve followed threads that indicate this is OK for some applications, and other threads that say it should be drilled out. Before I complete the carb rebuild I’d like to know if I should leave it, or remove it. I’d hate to rebuild, install and then have to take it off only to start all over again. Any thoughts or comments? Thanks.

Remove the rivet for DVDA applications.
Have you tested both diaphragms on the distributor? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Yup, they both work. Used a vacuum for advance and retard. How difficult will it be to remove the rivet? Dremel tool, drill??? Thanks. |

It depends on what the mandrel in the middle is made of, if it's aluminum it'll drill easily, if it's steel the bit will wander off to the side. Grinding the head off with a dremel is always a safe bet, poke the remnants out of the hole afterwards. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks for the support. The rivet was aluminum and, using progressively larger drill bits, it came right out. Now I'll do a carb rebuild and swap out the "clone", match it up with the correct dist and we'll see what happens. Thanks again.
Here's an "after" shot.

That hole is way to big, probably why they plugged it. You will idle at 2000 RPM. Re-plug it and drill the right size hole. |

The hole on DVDA is SUPPOSED to be BIG. It goes along with the 5°ATDC base timing.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

Agreed, big hole for DVDA. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Ok I've rebuilt the carb (basic kit) with no parts left over. I did notice that on the rear of the carb, the vacuum connection "tube" (for lack of a better description) was missing and I had another connection point (see pic). I did determine that the port I need was just missing the 1" x 3/16" brass tube. I tried my FAPS for a proper replacement, but alas, they had nothing. Any suggestions on where to buy this copper vacuum tube?
Second issue: on my rebuilt Solex 34 PICT 3 there's a throttle linkage arm that I don't know what it's supposed to do (or what it's for), that my Euromax clone does not have. Nor was there a description on an archive diagram on the 34 Pict. (see pic). My concern is if it will hinder the operation of the carb once I reinstall? Thanks.
