PostPosted: Sun Apr 11, 2021 3:11 pm    Post subject: Westy luggage rack bolts? Reply with quote

I am wondering if anyone knows where I can get original replacement bolts for the Westy luggage rack as I broke one while removing my rack to replace the seal or if anyone knows the size of them. I think they are M8x1.25 with a 16mm shank and 16mm head, but I'm not sure. Plus, I haven't been able to find that size anywhere.

I ordered the stainless steel bolts that the vendors sell but the head on the bolt is 14mm whereas mine are 16mm. I paid a premium for bolts that aren't even the correct size. This wouldn't be a problem if I were restoring the luggage rack, but I'm not and you can tell where the old bolts worn down the fiberglass if I use the new stainless bolts.

Thanks

I'm pretty good at finding stuff, odds are high you won't find the 16 mm heads in stainless steel.

not original, but BW has both Stainless, and painted:
https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/pop-top-roof-screw-t3-westfalia-stainless.html
https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/pop-top-roof-screw-t3-westfalia-painted.html

originals are M6, but have tapered threaded section as they are either self tapping or just tapered for aid installation

I can plate in zinc, nickel and copper. Will do the bolt heads in zinc and nickel.

Here's an M6 x 20, in stainless, with a 19.2 mm head:

https://www.mcmaster.com/90015A531/

Also this M6 x 16 with a 17 mm head, but note the different drive style (head shape)...maybe that would make your luggage rack more theft proof?

Other "wide-head" options that might work here:

If I pursued having stainless ones made with the correct head diameter, do you think anyone would be interested?

Closest so far with a 15mm head. 👍
So only 1mm (0.040”) small.

I replaced all of the rusty bolts on the luggage rack and the pop top with stainless steel "cheese head" bolts with stainless flat and lock washers and nuts that I purchased from my local full service hardware store.

Are they factory spec? No but I saw no point in living with the nasty rusty original fasteners until I could find an exact replacement (which may not exist).

From buslab's description: This pastel white screw, part number 255 070 908F, has multiple applications. We also carry a stainless steel version of this screw.
