Proudly got out my serp belt tool and killed my tensioner bolt on my VR6 this morning. If i Had RTFM I would have found you detension by using a M8x 50 bolt, not the tensioner pulley bolt.

Ill drill and Helicoil a repair, but share for the Collective Knowledge.

Bummer. VR6 is probably one of the easiest serp belt change procedures out there, especially if the belly pan is removed.

Well, dumba$$ saved $300 by removing the tensioner, cleaning the left hand threaded bolt, chasing the threads with a left handed m8 tap he had, and reinstalling with loctite blue.

That tensioner is a thing of beauty

I added two marks, aligned is where the belt releases, and the second shows the tensioner with bolt removed. Only about 1 cm of deflection measured on case.

I have just removed one of the bolts that hold the tensioner to the block and used it to detension the pulley. Pretty handy! Not sure of the length, but it was long enough.

Ok, that’s brilliant...and now I don’t have to keep an m8 with my spare belt, either. It pays to expose your dumbassery to those smarter than you.

The manual calls for a 50mm length bolt, but the actual depth screwed on is about 1 cm, marked above

That tensioner looks like it can be released with a 1/2" drive breaker bar as well.
