If you are going to clean the carb, I'd fill the ultrasonic cleaner with BERRYMANS chemdip. That way the aluminum will come out looking CLEAN.

If you use Purple power on the aluminum of the carb, it will have a "white residue" on it.

Let the ultrasonic cleaner run for about 20-30 minutes.

Earlier this afternoon I found a video about removing the carburetor and the poster claimed that any box end wrench would work. I have three 13mm box end wrenches of different configurations but the box end walls are too thick to fit between the nut and the intake tube. Switching to a smaller hex should solve the problem just as the copper plated nuts that are available for the exhaust system.

Thank you for the responses.

Thank you for the information about the ultrasonic parts cleaner. I ordered one and also got a gallon of Berryman's Chemdip, all from Amazon. It is supposed to arrive on Thursday. I hope I can wait. It should be great on the carb. I can use it to clean the other carb too. When I got the car there was another carb in a box but the seller didn't know if was the original or not. Maybe i will look up the tag number to see which one may be the original. The two carbs are both 31PICT-3 carburetors. The engine in my car is a 1300 with dual port heads (OEM). The block letter is AB. I also found out that I can make this into a 1600cc without any machining.

If you run out of the purple stuff try Pine-Sol instead. When I went to Boy Scout Camp as a kid we used Pine-Sol and water to wash down the latrines. I was turned on to this for washing shirt collars and cuffs. It gets out all the oils from the skin along with the dirt from the collars and cuffs. If it is diluted about 1 to 1 with water and you spray your hands, it will take out all the embedded dirt in the worls of your fingers and palms. It works very well without drying excessively. I suspect it will work very well with an ultrasonic cleaning device. You can get the large bottles at Costco or possibly online too.

Again Duncan, thanks for the information.

I wanted some better noise insulation in the rear of the squareback.

The factory used a 6.78mm layer of Coconut fiber, followed by thin cardboard/paper with tar-like paper ontop.

Lastly, I was able to re-install the factory coconut fiber, and ISP west cargo mat.

This is always a great thread, great work so far. You inspired me to tackle the rear torsion arm bushings in my Squareback. Yours is lucky to get so much attention!

One of my good friends cleaned up my shifter knob and re-oiled the wood.

So, I got this idea from Clatters 200+ page build thread. Thank you!

In the state of Texas, vehicle inspections do not require reverse lights.

The reverse light wiring on the Squareback was missing.

Since I'm running LED brake lights with a low LOOOW amp draw, I installed two more RED led bulbs into the reverse light sockets. Then tapped into the brake light wire and wired that to the reverse light socket.

I gave each plastic lens a coating of translucent red paint.

Boom, now I have two extra brake lights so hopefully I wont get rear-ended.

I should have told you about the material Classicvw uses to sound proof the rear luggage compartment of Beetles. Evidently it works so well that after it is installed along with the needle punched jute-like material you can barely hear the engine running when you are out driving. He has a few videos and an updated version that was made late last year. He buys it at Loews and I think you can find it on Amazon too. The material was originally made for sealing metal roof panels. It comes in a roll and is self-adhesive with an aluminum layer that faces out. It is much less expensive than the material sold for automotive sound proofing. I will see if I can find the video link and I will post it.

Here is the video link for the sound-proofing material from classicvwbugs.
https://www.classicvwbugs.com/2020/03/20/classic-v...nsulation/

Chris says this is good for the inside of the side panels too. I am going to use it on the front interior panels of my car that are normally covered with the needle-punched carpet. Then I am covering it all with new needle punched carpeting. The original charcoal material is no longer available because over the years no one has ordered it. That is a shame because what was available here matched to VW material exactly.

I added a small little voltage gauge which is zip-tied to my ECU power relay.

That way I can always flip up my back seat and see what voltage the ECU is getting fed from the relay.

Here you can see it getting 14.1 volts with the engine at idle, headlights on, wipers on.

Mr. Duncan:
It looks as if you are getting ready to reinstall the fuel injection. This is a smart move. If you are going to try to match the wiring I found a source for wire with colored tracing. It is an outfit on Amazon, but they are located in Florida, so you can contact them directly. The wire from the oil pressure sensor is getting bad from being too close to the heat riser pipes. So I did a search for blue wire with a green tracer and found it on Amazon. The shortest spool is 25 feet, so I will be running it from back to front rather than splicing the old and new together. If you order a bunch of wires they may sell you 10 feet cuts rather than 25 ft spools. TE sells colored wire too but I haven't check the prices or the minimums.

The source is Sherco Auto Supply

I am investigating building a Microsquirt for my Super Beetle after I change the pistons and cylinders sometime in the future.

I've already got fuel injection, it's the factory Bosch D-Jetronic FI system.

If anything, it looks like you're going to make a new FI harness. Wink

The ultrasonic parts cleaner died. First, the temperature ran away when the temperature was set at zero; became too hot to touch. Then, within moments all of the controls on the front panel went off leaving only the "ON" lights and the buzzing continued. The on and off switches on the front panel no longer worked, only the off switch on the back worked. Came back the following day and when I turned it in I got the same thing; no lights and the infernal buzzing and heating. I shut it down, cleaned out the pan, and I will be returning it.

It worked well for one carburetor using the Berryman stuff. I wonder if anyone has noticed that its near impossible to get the Berryman smell off of the recommended gloves. Don't get it one anything that you may want to keep though.

Not sure anyone has noticed, but this thing is not UL listed. Products coming from China are supposed to have both UL and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certifications which this appears to have neither. CSA is now UL certified or joint certification under UL.

Have you ever seen the injectors used on the early American Rabbits? They are held into the intake manifold with O-rings. I was wondering if your injection setup is held into the intake system in a similar manner? Do you have any pictures of the part arrangement you might share?

The person to ask on that would be Max Welton, as he's running Microsquirt on his type 3. He's also using modern injectors. Another person to ask would be Nate, but he's not on here as often as he used to be.
