30 years ago today, Rodney King beaten by LAPD officers.

On March 3, 1991, paroled felon Rodney King led police on a high-speed chase through the streets of Los Angeles County before eventually surrendering. Intoxicated and uncooperative, King resisted arrest and was brutally beaten by police officers Laurence Powell, Theodore Briseno, and Timothy Wind.

Unbeknownst to the police, a citizen with a personal video camera was filming the arrest, and the 89-second video caught the police beating King with their batons and kicking him long after he was incapable of resistance. The video, released to the press, caused outrage around the country and triggered a national debate on police brutality.

Four officers were eventually tried on charges of use of excessive force. Of these, three were acquitted, and the jury failed to reach a verdict on one charge for the fourth. Within hours of the acquittals, the 1992 Los Angeles riots started, sparked by outrage among racial minorities over the trial's verdict and related, longstanding social issues.

The rioting lasted six days and killed 63 people, with 2,383 more injured; it ended only after the California Army National Guard, the United States Army, and the United States Marine Corps provided reinforcements to re-establish control.

The federal government prosecuted a separate civil rights case, obtaining grand jury indictments of the four officers for violations of King's civil rights. Their trial in a federal district court ended on April 16, 1993, with two of the officers being found guilty and sentenced to serve prison terms. The other two were acquitted of the charges.

In a separate civil lawsuit in 1994, a jury found the city of Los Angeles liable and awarded King $3.8 million in damages.

In 2012, King was found dead in his swimming pool two months after publishing his memoir. The coroner found evidence of alcohol and other drugs in his system and ruled that based on his history of heart problems, he had likely experienced a cardiac arrhythmia which resulted in his accidental drowning.

One of the policy failures recognized from this incident was allowing all present to engage a suspect. Today, the senior officer present is required to stand back and manage/direct the response. This way, he isn't on a personal adrenaline rush from physical battle and injury. He can therefore be calmer, more measured, and control his officers better.

There have been cases where this protocol has not been followed, and the results are universally bad.

March 6, 1836: Before there was Alamo Rent-a-Car, there was the final battle of the Alamo.

Over 3000 Mexican soldiers killed the last of the approximately 183 defenders over the course of several days at the Alamo mission, which wasn't really even a fort. Whatever the politics and myths have evolved to, those defenders were unbelievable brave.

Start of Bulli production in Hannover
65 years old, but still way off retirement: the legendary VW Typ 2, lovingly called the Bulli by its fans, has been produced at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ plant in Hannover-Stöcken since 8 March 1956. Since then more than 9 million Bullis have been produced at the factory.
On 8th March 1956, the first test of the new VW Type 2 Transporter production line was carried out and full series production began on 20th April with 250 Type 2s being produced per day.

Some 2,000 people set out from Selma on March 21, protected by U.S. Army troops and Alabama National Guard forces that Johnson had ordered under federal control. After walking some 12 hours a day and sleeping in fields along the way, they reached Montgomery on March 25.

Nearly 50,000 supporters—Black and white—met the marchers in Montgomery, where they gathered in front of the state capitol to hear King and other speakers including Ralph Bunche (winner of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize) address the crowd.

“No tide of racism can stop us,” King proclaimed from the building’s steps, as viewers from around the world watched the historic moment on television.

Don’t know how we missed this but. On Friday March 19th.

MLK junior is assassinated in Memphis while standing on a balcony of the Lorraine Hotel. 1994 wife and I are driving around lost and look up to see the hotel and the balcony fully restored right on down to the cars in the parking lot. On the day of the killing I was in town with my family just passing through. Everyone was being stopped by National Guardsmen. Many bad things happened in 1968 including the death of Heinz Nordoff.

It’s 1997 and Tiger Woods wins the Masters for the first time. Even if he never picks up a club again he’s had one hell of a run.

Poet and novelist Sarah Josepha Buell Hale died at her home in Philadelphia at age 90, on April 30, 1879. A poem titled “Mary’s Lamb,” from her second collection of poems, published in 1830, became an instant favorite and one of the world’s most popular children’s poems—known to us today as “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

Just something different than our usual "noted" history posts.
