Sounds sort of like fingernails on a chalkboard. What would cause this?? Only happens on cold startup, and really only after the car has been sitting a couple days. Piston ring scraping against the cylinder wall? My oil level is spot on. I also thought about the fan belt, but I would think it would happen all the time if it was that. Any suggestions would be helpful, thx

Check your belt for proper tension

Belt tension seems about perfect, just over 1/2" deflection at center point between the two pulleys. It actually sound more metal-on-metal to me but don't really know for sure.

How do you feel about pulling the belt off. You say cold start up, cold outside cold or cold motor cold, Wink

That's what I was thinking, sounds like starter is on the outs. Good to check belt condition and tension as a precautionary step though.

Motor cold. I have no problem taking the belt off & trying it.

This would not surprise me, it's a Duralast reman starter that I JUST replaced under the lifetime warranty after continually having trouble with the previous one (I posted about that one several weeks ago.) Probably got the same exact (lack of) quality.

If it was a 4-speed I'd suggest it might be the main-shaft ball bearing being worn and 'dry'. Not sure what you have in your auto-stick.

Try this. When you know for sure it's going to occur the next morning, jack-up the rear of your car the night before and let trans oil migrate to the main-shaft ball bearing (if you have one).

My brother always parks backwards on a hill/driveway. He claims he's saving his trans (4-speed) ball-bearing. A little extreme but again I did grind some grooves in my case to get more oil to that bearing the last time I was there.

A new ball-bearing getting more oil has cured my winter 'screech' so far.
